On my frequent walkabout to LGSs, I was hailed by the owner. He said "I saved a trade in back for you". What he brought out was a used 686 in it's box. I looked at it and noticed a few things. It had a non fluted cylinder, 7 shot, and 5" barrel. I have a few hillery hole models, but I wasn't familiar with this one. The trigger, and of course the price sold me quickly. I hear and read a lot about Pythons and what a great trigger they have all the time. I intentionally try every Python trigger I run into. Most of my LGDs know me and let me snap them. I have yet to find a python with any better trigger than most S&Ws. I guess I can agree that they are shiny and have vent ribs, but that doesn't float my boat. Everyone to his own taste. The only Colt I really miss is my old long barreled New Service LC. Happy trails and enjoy the journey.
After looking in the Standard Catalog, I don' find many 5" barrels listed. It seems tha t the ones I find are mostly special issues. S&W 686+-6 2.webp686-6 1.webp

Hi, the original grips from Altamont are uncomfortable to me (and others here). My trigger is decent. I replaced the original grips with Altamont combat grips, bit haven't tried them out yet.

The trigger on this one is like butter, and then it goes boom. My trigger pull gauge shows a constant 4 pounds on single action, but it feels like no weight at all.

What a cool gun. I love 357 L frames.
I would have bought that, for sure.

Python SA triggers can be rectified for $250.

Journey, do you think if Colt put a Mountain Gun type barrel on their Anaconda frame, chambered it in 45 Colt, they'd sell?
They could call it the New Service.

It would be different. The pencil barrel on a mountain gun would be hard to mount a vent rib or no rib at all.. It would have to be satin or blasted finish. I'm not sure if a new Colt without a bling finish and vent rib would sell for that much more than a Smith. I'm sure that CZ will market it if they think they can sell the old names such as New Service. My old plated New Service LC with it's long skinny barrel and fau stag grips just couldn't be duplicated today. Some classics are just unique and can't be reissued.
