Just got my 15-22 - Need more mags and what mods should I do (binary trigger too)

Needed something cheaper to shoot than my M&P15 so ordered up a 15-22 and picking up my today. Excited!

I have been reading and searching the forum but quite a few of the threads are years old so just looking for current info...

Need mags... just stay with S&W 25 round mags or?

Would like to put a binary trigger on it soon possibly...

Any other mods?

Get a suppressor and a black dog 50 round drum and get ready to giggle in delight. The s & w 25’s are great - get a bunch.

Stick with the S&W mags. There is one aftermarket 35rd mag, but it has a tendency to jam from what I’ve been reading.

My thumb. I don't think the stock 25 round mags are hard to load at all. I push the spring down with my left hand while loading with my right.

There are a couple of loaders you can use to ease the process:

1. McFadden Lightnin’ Loader:
McFadden Machine Lightnin' Grip Loader

2. A loader that simply aids in pressing down the mag load button:

I’ve tried #1 and a 3D printed version of #2. I can’t say that either is better than the other. #1 may be a tad faster.

Palmetto State Armory has M&P 15-22 25 rd mags for $19.95 right now. Get as many as you can. They're easy to load, no need for any special loading gizmo. Replace the trigger before spending $$$on any other tacticool stuff!

I plan on putting a ton of rounds through it.. extra mags and a loader come in handy.

I find the .22 is a pain and slow to load 25 round mags. My .223 is much easier to load.. but a lot more expensive to shoot...

I put a 10" free float aluminum hand guard on mine, made by VISM. Do a search for VISM S&W 15-22 hand guard and it should show up. Its around $80 complete with all components needed to install it. It took me about a half hour to do the job. I have a pretty old model of the 15-22, no threaded barrel. But I think it is one of the most fun guns I've ever owned. Good luck with your upgrades.

Extra S&W mags and a McFadden loader are a must, then hit the range. I found there was no need for any other add ons, however 1000 rounds will tell you what you want to add. You'll have a blast!!

Outside of an optic, mounting the MBUS on a 45 degree offset, and a better trigger, I haven't seen or felt the need to do anything else to the rifle. I still need to get a good sling for it yet.


Depending on how the lower holds up, I may consider getting anti-walk pins but that will be on an as needed basis. If the pins stay put, why bother?

So I just checked Grabagun has the FDE 25 rounders for $17.99, and CDNNSport.com has several colors of the 25 rounders for $19.99. It seems like I found them a few months ago for $10-$15 a piece. But I ordered a bunch of mags around the same time. Maybe the full size AR mags were that ball park?
