All,

I just inherited this somewhat scruffy-looking Safety Hammerless (see attached pics). The serial number of 29733 suggests a manufacture date around 1889. It seems to be fully functional.

I realize it doesn't have much value, but it looks like it would be fun to shoot.

Is there any reason I shouldn't buy a box of 38 S&W ammo and have at it?

Time for a generational cleaning/lube and mechanical inspection! Then decide if it's ready for some low pressure ammo. Family guns are priceless.
Careful removing those grips if tight, guys here know the tricks and techniques to remove without breaking. The grips look delicate, if you can find others you may want to use for shooting if you decide to.
Ì have a thing for hammerless 38s of alĺ ages.
Nice family treat!
Smiles, Mike

I would shoot it, good luck finding ammo.
Who shot it last Grampa, Grandma?
Family guns are the best finds.

Normally I would recommend black powder ammunition for a revolver that old but 38 S&W is a pipsqueak loading that barely reaches 600 FPS so it is going to be relatively safe in your old top break. I would get a gunsmith to check it out then buy some of this:
