we have LOTS of bear hunters, and I have talked to them,,
actually, I have been fed bear a number of times at their homes,,

The consensus is that, in the right spot, the black bear goes down with a 243 Winchester.

I ain't going out after a bear with a 243 WIN,, so, it does not matter,,

Model 57, 6" flat nose semi jacket at 30 feet. Shoot the front shoulder and then run like hades, to where I set down the 1945 Winchester Mod 70 super grade, .30-06. Black bear country then its going to be a custom Siamese Mauser in 8X52 Siam. 180 gr round nose loaded with 48gr 4064. It'll stop anything on the North Am continent.

My choice too. I'm getting 1240 fps with Keith 250 and 19 gr 2400 so am at low end of your requirement : ).

I suspect that you still have your 44 elk sixgun. Sure would like to see a picture of it again. Maybe it is the image in your post but I can't see it.

The 2nd amendment mentions "Bear arms." You'd think as smart as them old dead guys were, they'd have been more specific. Joe

I study terminal performance in game. I have recovered over 100 bullets from animals. If black bears are the only worry a good 240 hollow point has the best reputation as a fight stopper. A animal control officer who's job it was to trap and eliminate trouble black bears has killed over 100 with handguns. I bow to his knowledge and experience. He found the 44 magnum superior in dispatching black bears. The 44 was only effective when shooting hollow points. When those super solids were used the bears often showed little sign of distress and were instantly on the fight. When hollow points were used the bear may not be dead instantly but all the fight was out of him and his attention was to his wound. There is a reason why non expanding bullets being outlawed for big game hunting in many states. There is always exceptions to the rule.
