I just put money down on a used 5904 on a whim and I'm looking to pick up a few extra magazines. CDNN has OEM magazines and MecGar magazines for $2 more. Is there a difference?

BTW, both are blued and both hold 15rds.

The MecGar mags are new. New 3rd gen S&W mags are running $34 and up when someone has them in stock.

Magazine issues are usually the #1 issue in a semi automatic handgun malfunctioning. I used to replace magazine springs (and sometimes followers) in used S&W mags.

Lack of availability of most springs and such makes that hard.

When I bought a trade in 5906 a few months ago, I ordered MecGar nickle 17rd mags for spares. I trust them as much as OEM (more than some used mags as I have no idea how abused they were).

If you ever think you'll use the mags in a KelTec or with the extended baseplates with a 6900 series gun, get the 15rd as the 17rd do not fit.

I can vouch for the reliability of Factory mags (#1 choice) and the Mec-Gar magazines. For the listed price... I'd grab a handful of those Mec-Gars. You won't be sorry you did. They make a reliable and durable 59xx series magazine.

Enjoy that 5904.

I edited this post since I decided to just go with the MecGars. I wouldn't doubt if the OEM mags were made by MecGar anyway.

first choice when all things are equal would be OEM mags....Mecgar second ....and I have had no problems with ACT mags in any of my Sigs ;)....after those choices...there is no other options for me:D

No issues with my MecGars. I keep hearing that they are the actual manufacturer of the OEM mags, IDK is that' true or not.

Mec-Gar mags for 59-series guns are 0.005" FATTER than factory OEM.

This caused a problem with a 659 I own.

CDNN actually has three kinds of mags for sale: blue Mec Gar, stainless S&W marked mags and blue mags just referred to as "OEM". The OEM mags are the cheapest of the three.

At least with the compact 9mm single stack guns, I've never seen a blued OEM magazine with any markings. Some of the stainless ones have the S&W logo stamped on them, but most don't.

OEM 59xx magazines have a tiny "Smith and Wesson" stamped in the indentation on the bottom plate of the magazines.

BTW, parts are interchangeable between the MecGar and OEM 59xx magazines. I've done mix and match just to see if they worked and they do.

That will not work with any Pro Mag I've seen for any caliber.

Word of caution, stay away from Pro Mag, magazines. I recently bought a 5904 that came with the mandatory 10 round mag. The Mag was a Pro Mag. It work properly EXCEPT it would not eject from the 5904. You had to pull it out. Two days ago, I received 3 S&W 5904 mags. They work perfect and eject properly.

Absolutely. I have yet to find a Pro Mag that wasn't junk. Several years back I bought some for my 5906. The ones that would feed wouldn't eject, the ones that would eject, wouldn't feed.

Bought them from Cheaper than Dirt and returned them as soon as I could. Utter junk.

I've heard people say Pro mag makes good Mini 14 magazines but everything else they do is junk

I wouldn't use a Promag in any firearm if you gave it to me for free. They're a magazine company that doesn't know how to properly make magazines.

Fluke??? I ordered a magazine for my FNH FNP .40 on ebay. I received a 14 round, instead of the 10 round that was listed. Was this on purpose? Bob

More than likely. I've seen people sneak 30rd. AK mags and the like as holding 10rds., but anyone who knows what the normal capacity mags look like can tell it's not a 10rd. magazine. Officially they only allow mags holding 10rds. or less to be sold.
