Got up this morning and checked the used gun section on the Kittery Trading Posts website like I do every morning. The first thing I saw was a 15-22P, 97% with box and papers for $335. Naturally as soon as they opened at nine I called and put a deposit on it and I'll get down there in a couple weeks to pick it up. It's about 2-1/2 hour drive each way so I'll wait until I'm down that way to pick it up. Then my thoughts turned to accessories!:D
So I jumped on the forum to see what you guys thought of these and the first thing I saw was that I cannot put a VFG on this like I have on my rifle without a BATF tax stamp. To get one of these would you contact the BATF directly? Also, is it something that you only have to get once or does it have to be renewed regularly? I really would like to put one on as I think it would be way cool, but I will NOT break any gunlaws. I will do it legally or not at all. I searched through the posts for info on the procedure but didn't find much. Have any of you guys gone through this?

Thanks in advance...................

Pistol with more than one grip = AOW (Any Other Weapon). Requires tax stamp. Tax stamp is a one time deal.

My little friend. Yep, I found out from here that a VFG is a huge no-no without the stamp. And in the collective borg state of Illinois, it's not doable at all.:(

Have fun with the gun! It got me back in the game after several years away.

Short Answer is......

yes, you apply to ATF directly. AOW is a $5 tax, MG's, suppressor's, SBR's are a $200 tax. Also, your state must allow private ownwership of such a weapon.

Go to Subguns.com and read & ask questions. They have the most knowledgeable members & resource libraries on their site pertaining to NFA/CLASS III stuff. There are a lot of rules, not impossible, but complicated and intimidating to a first timer entering the NFA arena. It can be very costly to make a mistake.

Okay, after digging around the BATF website for quite awhile I finally found the section concerning vertical foregrips on handguns. It looks like what i need to do is find an NFA dealer that will install the grip and do the transfer to me. If I am correct going this route will only amount to a $5 charge by the BATF plus whatever the dealer charges me! Sounds a lot better than the $200 to go directly through the BATF.
Thanks for your replies, if this is half as much fun as my 15-22 rifle it's going to be a blast.

In case anyone wants the specific reference here it is from the ATF websnite:

Adding a Vertical Fore Grip to a Handgun

Reading the ATF rules, I don't see how the M&P15-22 applies, since the barrel is 18", instead of less than 18", doesn't have a short stock, but an extended stock, and isn't meant to be shot using one hand. Could someone explain what I am missing with this?

OP is talking about the now discontinued 15-22P Pistol version which does have a short barrel...
