Greetings. Looking for some sage advise on a couple K-38's I spotted yesterday in a gun shop, sorry no pics. . . Just signed up, this is my first post.
1. K209064 5-screw, 6" barrel, target stocks, no
target trigger or hammer, no box, no tools,
etc., serial # matches on cylinder and bottom
of grip frame, bluing is not deep dark high
gloss I have seen before. YOM 1953? Has a
recessed muzzle unfamiliar to me on any S&W
revolver. A straight sided recess, not sloping.
Can someone please comment on this muzzle
recess? I aked about it in the shop and "they"
thought it was ligit. Asking price is $959.99.
Price seems very high to me?
2. K277186 4-screw, 6" barrel, magma grips, no
target trigger or hammer, no box, no tools,
etc., serial # matches on cylinder and bottom
of grip frame, do not know if serial on inside of
grip matches. Slight bluing wear on left side of
muzzle, holster wear? YOM 1956? Asking
price is $989.99. Price also seems very high to
me on this one?
Thanks in advance for any and all replys.

Prices vary widely by which state you live in. Those prices would be very high in where I live.

The straight-sided recess in the muzzle is called a counterbore. It's usually done (not by S&W) to remove a bulge , ring or other bad defect near the muzzle without disturbing the outer appearance. Being that the counterbore is larger than bore diameter, the bullet just goes on through with no disturbance from the previous defect.

The prices you quote are way too high, in my opinion.

First welcome to the s&w forum.

I think I just paid $695 for a k38 Target Masterpiece w/6" barrel with a 99.98% buling with the box and tools. My k38 Combat Masterpiece w/4" barrel was $595 in the same condition. Both revolvers had slight freckling which the Simi chrome polish removed. But I put the values much higher now. But the normal prices would be between $500 to $750 if I was looking to buy. One came with the famous s&w screw driver too. I think there worth $200?

Hi there and welcome to the forum! I agree those prices are way too high. One place to keep an eye out for one will be right here in the guns for sale or trade thread. Not only more real world prices but no one will damage their reputation here by knowingly selling you a piece of junk. Good luck on your hunt and share what you find with us!

Thank you all. Really appreciate your un-biased opinions and information sharing. I will certainly leave the two I mentioned above behind and continue on my journey.
