I have what appears to be an early k frame .22
serial # is 246xxx can anyone tell me what I have. no checkered grips, full target grip covering most of frame. case colored hammer and trigger, in like new condition, very stiff to open pull out cylinder, but got it working well. I don't believe the revolver was used much if at all, and not in many years.
Thank-you

Welcome aboard!

I moved your post from S&W Antiques to the S&W Hand Ejectors: 1896 to 1961 section.

I'll assume you didn't omit the "K" serial number prefix from the butt. Serial number "246XXX" wouldn't be a K-22. It does fall in the range of an I frame .22/32 HFT (Heavy Frame Target) and would date to sometime around 1920. Cylinder chambers were not recessed for case head at that time, so only shoot standard velocity ammunition.

If the serial number is in fact K246XXX, you have a K-22 Masterpiece (6" barrel) or a K-22 Combat Masterpiece (4" barrel) from around 1955 and you can shoot any .22 LR ammunition that you like!

I don't think that it is a .22/32 HFT only because I have none in my database starting with 246.

That is not a guarantee but the serial numbers jump from 245XXX to 253XXX.

I hope these come through with cylinder pic and full revolver pic
does this help with determining model and date of manuf?

See Chad's post #2 above, with the reference to the K-22 Masterpiece. A similar gun to this made after 1957 was also called the model 17 but this one had no model number.

It is a K-22 Masterpiece. The K in the serial number is clearly seen on the cylinder. You may have ignored it because it is on the other side of one chamber from the digits. So, the serial number is K246341 (I think that is what I am seeing).

The serial number suggests shipment in late 1955 or early 1956. There should be a screw at the top of the sideplate on the revolver's right side. That makes it a five screw gun, normal for 1955.

Actually a nice looking piece. Congrats.

This /\/\/\

Read the serial number off the butt and include all markings when inquiring. As others have stated, you haver a postwar K-22 Masterpiece.

value?

The K is visible on the cylinder and under the barrel where ejector rod goes. but this appears to have target grips and not checkered like most masterpieces I've seen? the gun is in excellent condition like it has not been shot much if at all. What would be a range of value?? my picvs don't seem to come out clear?

5 screw

There are three screws on the right side with one at top just in front of the hammer on sideplate. Where can I find the reference materials for serial # look up?? I'm not as up to speed on the S & W side. I have a highway patrolman .357 I bought almost 50 years ago in my teens and gave to my wife as a wedding gift!! and then a couple antique engraved, but always did like them, so now may need to change my collecting areas, Thanks all for the help

There are actually four screws in the sideplate. One is hiding under the stocks. The fifth screw is the one in the front of the trigger guard - which retains the plunger and spring for the cylinder stop.

Yes. Those smooth targets are newer than your revolver.

Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 4th Edition. Available on Amazon.

Just looking at your photos, I'd put this one in the $700 range.

Good for you - and her! Tell us the serial number and we can help you date it, if you wish.

Thanks all for the help
You are very welcome. We all like to be of assistance when we can.
