I've taken to using my k-22 in my local bullseye league for my 22 pistol and am eyeing up a k-38 for the centerfire matches.
I have been shooting bullseye a long time, started with a k-22 then moved to high standards and model 41's but find myself going back to the wheelies lately.
My k-22 came with the standard magna grips which seem a little too small for me.I have several sets of pachmayrs which work well but can't get over the looks of them on a classic blue steel gun.
My brother shoots distinguished revolver matches and i'd like to get into them as well.
He tells me for distinguished matches the grips MUSt be factory- can't use pachmayrs or grip adapters.
first- is what my bro says about the distinguished matches correct?
second what do you folks find is the best grips on your k frames for bullseye use?

My take on grips, after reading the NRA pamphlet on bullseye pistol is that they prohibit Pachmayr grips that enclose the backstrap. I use Pachmayr Grippers with the open backstrap as well as Hogue smooth hardwood grips without finger grooves or checkering.

I've been shootin' Bullseye for years usin' Ahrends......

The rulebook states under section 3.1.4 for Distinguished Revolver:

3.1.4 Distinguished Revolver - The revolver must be capable of chambering and firing a 158-grain round
nose or semi-wadcutter .38 Special cartridge. It must be a factory manufactured revolver with no external
modifications except for stocks which may be modified or changed because of the size of the competitor's hand or
to facilitate loading. Except for stocks and the honing of the sear or sear notch to make a more crisp trigger, and
maintain a 2 1/2 lb. minimum trigger pull, no external or internal modification may be made to the revolver as
manufactured and sold by the factory of origin. No parts may be removed from the revolver, either externally or
internally, nor may any part be added. Specifically prohibited is any system of recoil control based upon
compensators, barrel venting, barrel porting or weighted grips. Exposed holes that have been drilled and tapped
for mounting of a scope are not considered to be an external modification.

(a) Trigger - Must have single and double action capability and must be capable of lifting 2 1/2 lbs when the
revolver is cocked for single action firing. Triggers will be weighed. Any trigger, sold by the manufacturer of
the revolver, without modification, may be used.

(b) Sights - Fixed or adjustable rear sights may be used. An adjustable front sight is not allowed.

(c) Barrel - Length not to exceed six and one-half inches (6 1/2").

(d) Stocks - Except as set forth above, the right and left stocks must be mirror images of each other.

(e) Ammunition - Any safe .38 caliber ammunition using the 158 grain round nose or Semi-Wadcutter bullet
only.

(f) The following are not allowed. Trigger Shoes, compensators of any type or design; any external trigger
stop device; any internal trigger stop not originally installed by the factory as original equipment in stock
revolvers of the same make and model; tape on the stocks or stocks flared at the base.

No mention is made of grips that cover the backstrap or grip adapters (or even grip material). Since they are not disallowed, they are permissible.

Personally, I use either Ahrends "Tactical" finger-groove K-frame grips or S&W K-frame Target grips for my DR guns (S&W Model 19-3, Model 14-4, 14-5, 14-6, and/or S&W Model 68-2).

For my .22, I use a S&W 617 with an N-frame Ahrends "Tactical" non-finger-groove round-butt grip and the gap at the top filled in with wood putty.

The "no Pachmayr wraparound grips" rule is for CMP Excellence In Competition/Service Pistol matches.

thanks- it sounds like I have a bit more leeway in stocks than I was originally led to believe

I've shot the revolver leg match at Perry with Pachmayrs...no issues. Just like autos, you can't have thumbrests. It must be a service-type stock.
