I have a model 19 that has a goofy trigger. It's a 19-3.

When in single action. Some times the when I pull the trigger it gets forced forward along with the hammer. Not all times, and only when I'm very gentle like taking a nice aimed shot. If in double action this does not happen.

I thought at first the problem was the trigger stop, so I pulled that out, but it did not solve the problem. Any idea?

It sounds like the symptoms of push-off. Basically, the rebound slide spring is more than the trigger pull weight. You can check it by cocking the revolver and pushing on the rear of the hammer, with no tension on the trigger. If the hammer falls, it is likely someone has messed with the sear and you need to do some repair.

Thanks for the response.

I am not able to get it to push-off but I did take a video and upload it here:

Maybe someone could help point me in the right direction?

What you describe is the first indication of "push-off". It will get worse to where pushing against the hammer spur will cause the hammer to fall and, eventually, the gun will not cock at all.

This is repaired by stoning the sear surface of the trigger itself. The angle needs to be changed very slightly. You will find the best instructions in a book by Kuhnhausen, "The S&W Revolver a Shop Manual". I do not trust on-line videos to adequately instruct! The book is easily available from many on-line book sellers.

The quickest and easiest way, and often cheapest, to fix this is replace the trigger with a new one from S&W.

Note: While the trigger can be stoned to correct push-off you must have a good understanding of how it is done! The trigger can be ruined completely very easily if you are overly aggressive or use too coarse of a stone. The amount of metal removed in stoning is less than the thickness of the case-hardened surface of the trigger!

Push off is when the single action sears on the hammer and trigger don't have positive engagement. This sounds more like the hammer contacting the DA sear on the trigger after it leaves the SA sear. This happens when the trigger does not go back far enough for the hammer to clear as it starts to fall.

This can be due to a trigger stop that's too long, but can also occur on a gun without a trigger stop. The fix is to make it so that the trigger can go rearward a tiny bit more to allow clearance for the hammer to pass by.

This is a S&W customer service or gunsmith repair, not some do-it-yourself project like painting a door.

So was it the strain screw not being fully tightened? It's a common thing with S&W revolvers, especially if someone thinks that screw is for adjusting the weight of the trigger pull.

Yep it was not screwed in all the way. I never noticed nor ever touched it. Thanks for the help!
