I found a 17-2 in my local pawn shop. It was filthy, had a little bit of minor rust, and looked like it had never been cleaned. It was listed at $399. I talked them into $325 cash OTD. The only problem is that the rear sight blade is bent - looks like it was dropped on the rear sight. I can fix that - my local smith has NOS. The rust came off with grease and light rubbing with 0000 steel wool and a brass brush, with bluing underneath. No permanent damage there.

No, it is not a pristine NIB pistol. But I have been looking for a K22 for a while, and I think this is as good as I am going to get without spending more than I have right now. No camera at the moment. Later. And it is for shooting, not a safe queen. I will sell something else to make up the money.

What are decent K22s (shooter grade) going for? I feel this was a good deal. I have not seen a K22 in my local shop for some time. But not sure what price.

You did well with the 325 OTD price,
I would expect that any K22 would fetch 400 in shootable condition.
Now go shoot the thing!!!!

Thanks for the price estimate. It is mechanically fine. Timing is good. The rear sight will be replaced this weekend. (Did I tell you about the $250 27-2 5" at the pawn shop a few years ago? Or the $295 686?) Pawn shop guns always have some abuse or neglect, but we have a duty to give them a good home. I guess it all evens out.

You did well on that price. Why is it that when someone drops a gun it hits on the rear sight? Maybe it's a good thing since they can be replaced.

As you said, you did about as good as it gets for a K22 in shooting condition. Nice to have a woods gun that if it gets dropped again, it is not a heart stopping event. Get a brick of 22s and have some fun!

By way of comparison, I bought this pre-17 4-digit serial # gun for $350 otd a year and a half ago. It was freckled pretty badly, but is good to go otherwise, including a beautiful set of diamond magnas. I work on it with 0000 steel wool, very lightly, every month or so, and it looks much better than it did when I made the pictures. I leave it heavily oiled between cleaning sessions, hoping to break some of the rust particles free. It is a wonderful old shooter.

No, but I sure your PM box is bustin' open. :D

It is probably bad taste to talk about money into a hobby. Sorry. But almost all of my firearms are second hand. I got rid of the safe queens, shoot everything, and plan to give most of them away to family - the M17 will go to a niece. I love finding lost treasures in pawn shops, and fixing them up. Living in a small town that was very hard hit by the last three years' recession, a lot of people have been forced to sell or pawn firearms, and other family valuables. I feel for them. But the pawn shop priced the M27 the same as the M13. What the he77 was I supposed to do? ;-) And they priced the M17 for less than the Glocks. After all, it was only a revolver. But I have no idea what pawn shops in big cities are like. Maybe there are just more guns in rural areas. There is a lot of substance hunting around here. Anyway, I will give a range report and pictures after the weekend. It is a nice pistol.
