K22 age

A good friend of mine has gotten a K22 from an estate. He is wanting to know when it was made. I have a second edition of SCSW but can't locate any info on it's age. Anyone have a newer edition of the SCSW. The serial # is 3145XX any help would be appreciated.

Is the there a letter before the serial number on the butt of the grip? Pictures help.

If it is truly a K22, it was made in 1957 before S&W began stamping model numbers. The serial number starts with a "K" which may be separated from the numbers and be overlooked by someone not familiar with S&W serials.

I just checked with him and he stated it has a "K" in front of the numbers but is separated fairly far. That'a why he did not think it was part of the s/n.

Probably 1957 just at same time Smith Wesson started stamping model numbers on the frame.

The K is definitely part of the serial.
