My Model 17 is serial # 1K5148. Can someone tell its shipment date?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Wow! That old!
Thank You Wetdog!
LOL; (1970) that's not old.
Yes. 50 years. I married my bride that year. In fact, 50 years ago last Saturday. A long time to be married to a wonderful woman.
But, not so old as applied to revolvers from Smith & Wesson. Now, my .32-20 target model that shipped when my grandfather was 12 (1904), that's old.

The published information on serial numbers refer to production dates, which may differ from ship (sales) dates by days to decades - no joke! A popular gun may have been sold the same year as it was made...unless it got put far back into the vault...or was produced late that year...
So the letter of authenticity is the only way to get a ship date, or its official S & W birthday.
Yes, sort of. Mr. Jinks will supply the month and year. With a letter you get the precise day of the month and year, as well as the destination. You can join the S&W Collectors Assn, and request one ship date a week, I believe.
