K32 Masterpiece Redux

Nice turn around. I wonder how it will shoot.

Gary Reeder is another Smith
I think he can make a new cylinder for the revolver.

Great job on the refinishing, gun really looks nice. all you need now is a new strain screw.

That came out really nice. Glad to see you rescued it Guy. I've been watching for .32 parts ever since you got that gun and they have just disappeared. I'm glad I built my .327s when I did.

^^^ What he said. ^^^

I observed recently that I hit just the right window when I built my Project 616 and Model 16-3 homage... I’m not sure I could do either today, or if the opportunities still existed, how much more they would cost. :(

Just before I embarked on my journey of acquisition, I missed the one other item I would have liked to have used for a similar project. There was a plain,service-style (“pencil”) barrel factory marked as 32 S&W Long that would have made up into a dandy 32 M&P, but as Maxwell Smart used to say, “Missed it by that much!”

I guess there are still some neat possibilities out there, but when does it pass into the realm of obsession?

PS to Oldman11; be aware that converting a K-22 cylinder to 32-20 for use in an existing K-32 will require milling the rear face from the new cylinder to clear the lug on the left side of the frame. K-22s have recessed chambers while K-32s don’t. It’s not a big problem, but it is a consideration. I had to have it done on my “faux Model 16-3.”

Right now I believe I will leave my k.32 masterpiece along. It’s one of the best revolvers sw ever made like it is.

How about a couple of pictures of her all dressed up?

Very nice! Iffn' it were mine, I'd rechamber the cylinder to .327 Federal and fit a second cylinder in .32-20.

I rechambered a Ruger 32 H&R Single Six to 32-20 and shoot both in it. The 32-20 bullets must be set deeper to fit in the cyl.

And another 32 Ruger cyl to 327 Fed Mag for a convertable.

I have a Cimarron Model P Jr, which is a 7/8 scale Single Action Army. It has .32-20 and .32 H&R Magnum cylinders. I wonder if the .32 Magnum cylinder would be strong enough to hold .327 Federal pressures?

I think all those new ones: 32 H&R Magnum and .327 are merely a passing fad. I'd just shoot 32 S&W Longs like it was made for. And, how does it shoot? Just curious.

Really a nice job on the restoration. Did you do the work or did you have it done? Either way, it looks great and it is nice to see it restored in all it's glory.

Were could you get a spare .32 cylinder? I have a k.32 masterpiece that is about 80 to 85% that I would like to be a .32-20. I don’t know about the .327 as it might be too much for the frame.

That's a pretty simple re-chamber. The K frame will handle it just fine!

The 32 Long and 32 H&R cylinders can both be re-chambered to 32-20 (and shoot all three cartridges). But the 327 Fed Mag extends past the shoulder of the 32-20 and is a bit larger than the 32-20 neck. So a 32-20 reamer will leave the bottom of the 32-20 neck slightly oversize. This is not a big deal however, and the advantage is that you can shoot both 32-20 and 327 from the same cyl (and all four cartridges).

Yes the 327 case will expand more up to the 32-20 shoulder but easily resizes, especially with a Tungsten Carbide die. And if you only shoot the 327 in the 32-20 cyl, you only neck resize the 327.

But frankly I wouldn't re-chamber a 32 Long cyl, they're too scarce. I'd start with a 22 cylinder for a convertible cyl., they're a lot more plentiful.

I'd hardly call the 32 H&R new or a fad since it's going on 34 years of popularity.

The 327 is newer, but is looking even more popular than the 32 H&R.

This has been long in the making and it came out nice. Were the rust pits micro welded then filed flat?? Too bad you don’t mention the person that restored the gun, others may need his help. He is Talented to say the least.

Now all you have left to do is enjoy what you have. Shooting .32 long is a relaxing way to spend time on the range. But, like most of us, the guns we created tend to sit on shelves in the safe rather then being shot. Nicely done, Larry

Larry, I’m not getting the time to shoot much of anything these days, but in the rare occasions I do get to the range, either my Project 616 or my faux 16-3 (or both) are sure to be in my kit. :D
