Went on my annual Kansas pheasant hunt trip and though we didn’t see as many birds as usual the weather was great and we had a blast. The Milo was too wet to cut this year which that really hurt the hunting but we still did OK and watching the dogs work is always a pleasure. Especially watching a young dog mature a little each year and turn into a good bird dog like the one in the picture. This dog Britt, couldn’t find a pheasant if it sat on his nose the previous two years but this year he did a great job pointing!

We don't have pheasant hunts in Mississippi because we don't have pheasants. I went to Illinois to a hunt about 30 years ago. The limit was two, which I got in the first five minutes of the hunt, so we just shot rabbits and a few quail for the rest of the hunt. We brought home our two pheasants apiece and about 30 rabbits. We gave the quail and a few rabbits to the guy who invited us. I still think about that hunt and the fun we had.

I was in South Dakota 3 weeks ago for my 24th annual hunt. I didn't go last year due to COVID. We had our biggest group ever, 9. We limited out each day, 27. Weather was great and we all had a good time.

My oldest childhood friend goes and we took his oldest son and his youngest came up from Louisiana and met us there. They all enjoyed themselves.

I have been hunting with the same family all these years and they have adopted me. I have given shotguns to most of the grandchildren as they get old enough. They will get most of my shotguns when I am gone.

Ah yes,

one of the few upland bird hunts, where you can experiance a ......
"Heart Attack", when a big Rooster gets up six feet from you and tells you where to go !!

My brother and I had eaten enough "Long tails" by the age of eighteen, that we did not want to ever see one again.
They are a fun bird to hunt and to watch all the feather fly, I just can't get
over how they can hide in a plowed field of just dirt clumps and not be seen !!

Never got to hunt them in snow, since our hunts were in the center of Calif.,
in the Sacramento valley, where you got either, fog, wind or rain.

Nevada Ed I just can't get over how they can hide in a plowed field of just dirt clumps and not be seen !! [/QUOTE said:
I was hunting in Kansas and saw one go down in a small patch of trees and never saw him move. I walked over and could not see the bird. One of the hunters had a dog and he called him in and the dog couldn't find him so the owner told me the bird wasn't there. I started walking slowly in circles and dragging my feet and kicking leaves and found the bird. I guess when the bird went down he went under the leaves and there was not any scent for the dog. I think they are the prettiest and sneakiest birds I've ever seen. Larry

One cool thing that happened on the trip was when the little Brittany dog in the picture pointed a pheasant and I flushed it and dropped it like a rock. The dog started sniffing the bird and it woke up and started flying about 10 feet off the ground with the dog running under it so I couldn’t shoot. It flew about 150 yards away into a tall tree and the dog was underneath it barking at it. I started walking up and a big hawk circled once then came into a power dive and hit that pheasant and knocked him off the tree. He fell straight down, motionless, so I think he was dead before he hit the ground.

My last Kansas hunt was in 2008, and I am told that I had fun. Seems on the first morning I had a heart attack, and still completed the three day hunt before telling anyone of my misery. I don't remember the hunt at all.

Nice hunt - It is really fun to pheasant hunt. We used to have lots of them here in Ohio in the 60's and 70's, but they are few and far between now. We went to SD from the mid 90's through early 2000's. We shot a 6 man limit on one pass of a shelterbelt one year. We used to duck hunt in the morning then hit the fields after a late breakfast and short nap. You couldn't start hunting till noon during the first week or two then 10am thereafter. Great times, you are a lucky man ! Shot a bunch of ducks during those years as well.

I was in a group that hunted the Beloit/Jewell County area for years. Our last hunt was around 2011. A single rooster for 12 guys over the course of a weekend. Sadly, I don't think its improved. I haven't shot a quail since 2010 either and as a kid in the '80s up until 2010 or so I'd hunt every weekend. We still have a few coveys around but I'm not about to shoot them though numbers were a bit better this year. I'm convinced the herbicides are the cause of the steep decline. No weed seed means no food.

I just got back from a three day adventure in Decatur County which is in the NW part of the state. It was almost too warm to hunt. Every year we have seen bird numbers go down, this year no exception. We did find more quail than usual. Most attribute the decline to lack of habitat and the use of chemicals in farming that kill everything, bugs, weeds, and everything in between.

I am Kansas born and bred. Pheasant hunting was always our main hunting adventure every year. I could bore you for hours with pheasant hunting stories. We had several big farmers over the years that we had permission to hunt. Some of them would come back to Northeast Kansas to quail hunt with us. I would love to be able to go again, but if I went out into a draw full of fire weeds somebody would have to come get me. Hunting pheasants was a many year tradition. Good dogs, good gun, good friends and many stories to tell.

Wonder does it feel good to kill all those birds in one day. Too bad you can't read this. Yeah, lots of fun to kill things.

Bird hunting with dogs is perhaps the greatest pleasure on can experience with clithes on. Whether it be with retrievers or pointres, dogs really make the hunt.
Next year I am planning on booking a sandhill crane hunt over in Texas-that really looks like fun!!
