I've tangled with coons for quite some time since first coming to WV and I can say what works well at my end.
Handgun:a good JHP round is best,FMJ just swings through and they run off,.38,.357,.44 all work well,9MM...en I have to try some JHP the FMJ I used was dismal, hell I've had them run with 230gr .45 FMJ!
Shotgun:I have a 12ga and .410 but the 12 with a high base turkey 2 3/4 loaded with #4 works wonders within it's range,never tried the .410
.22-if you use a .22 shoot straight, otherwise they may look at you like "*** are you doing?" and walk off, tough little SOB they are.
The one and only round I've seen that stops them could with a solid hit is Aguila Sniper Sub Sonics;granted the 60gr lead bullet doesn't stabilize well out too far,but within about 20yds it's fine.
.223

just load with a good JHP or SP and watch out! makes a damn mess at close range and out of an AR it's almost overkill, almost.
You can use others,I have a new .375 H&H I'd like to test and if I see a coon here soon I may try it out
