Killer Raccoons

For killer raccoon killing, I'd prefer a Winchester Model 12 riot gun loaded with No. 4 buck. Just hold the trigger back and keep pumping.

I like setting out some food scraps out about 125 yards from the back of my house, sit on my deck and wack the Racoons with my Ruger Number 1 in 223. Every one of them flips over and spins it's tail like a little propeller for about 10 seconds. Tons of fun.

Racoon spin is kinda strange I done them in with a coal shovel before now I use my Marlin 60.

Anything I can get my hands on after reading how vicious those little varmints are. Preferably my three inch 13 loaded with 158gr .357's.

I've tangled with coons for quite some time since first coming to WV and I can say what works well at my end.

Handgun:a good JHP round is best,FMJ just swings through and they run off,.38,.357,.44 all work well,9MM...en I have to try some JHP the FMJ I used was dismal, hell I've had them run with 230gr .45 FMJ!

Shotgun:I have a 12ga and .410 but the 12 with a high base turkey 2 3/4 loaded with #4 works wonders within it's range,never tried the .410

.22-if you use a .22 shoot straight, otherwise they may look at you like "*** are you doing?" and walk off, tough little SOB they are.
The one and only round I've seen that stops them could with a solid hit is Aguila Sniper Sub Sonics;granted the 60gr lead bullet doesn't stabilize well out too far,but within about 20yds it's fine.

.223 :D :D just load with a good JHP or SP and watch out! makes a damn mess at close range and out of an AR it's almost overkill, almost.

You can use others,I have a new .375 H&H I'd like to test and if I see a coon here soon I may try it out :D

I often have to shoot them out of the window to my study, which overlooks the bird feeders and the entrance to the small barn where I store hay and oats for my two horses. As a result, it is unwieldly using a rifle. .22 ain't enough for one-stop shots on the body.

Enter the 148 grain .38 wadcutter fired from a Model 19-4 or a Model 52-2. Usually enough to anchor 'em with one shot; two always does it. Minimizes the floppin' and flippin'. It's also a lot less of mess (versus a shotgun) to clean up and throw over the fence for the vultures.

Bullseye

After using my shotgun for the deed, I vowed to give them a fighting chance with a 22. My attitude has changed as I've replaced a few bird feeders. Screw 'em! So much more gratifying to blow them away with a shotgun!

I sure am glad you posted this as I can now demonsrate to the wife why I need mulitple S&W .22 revolvers. Twenty-two would be the caliber of choice for close quarters back yard Racoon combat. These masked bandits attacked in a pack and my trusty 617 is only a six shooter! So I now have a documented need for owing at least three of them: 617 strong side OWB, Model 43 in a cross draw on the left, and Model 34 snubbie on the ankle.

Oh, great! First it was zombies, then bears, coyotes, panthers, sasquatches and giant snakes! Now racoons! Is it even safe to go out? Oh the humanity! Thankfully, my guard cat is on duty.

Maybe now the folks that post pictures of the "cute little raccoons" on the back porch will see why it's foolish to feed the little bastages.

If I were to feed them, I'd give them some kibbles of "rough on rats" mixed in with the fancy feast. With all the kitties and dogs around here, a good healthy dose of lead pellets seems to do the trick!
