I don't know if I have ever seen an "Official" definition of "Kit gun.". However, it appears to have something to do with the revolver being of small size and easily being carried in your "Kit,' i.e. a small container for holding your personal effects, maybe a fishing tackle box, etc. The British military usage of "Kit" means something like a knapsack carried by a soldier.

I don't know for sure, but I think S&W coined that term...Kit Gun.
A gun you could carry in a tackle box or throw in a pack. K-22 "Kit Gun".
that's all I got. Lot's of S&W experts on here, they'll know.

S&W lists it's model 317 as a "kit gun" with alloy frame ( air weight) 22 LR, 8 shot, 3 inch barrel , weighs 12.5 ounces and has adjustable Hi-Viz sights.
I have one and really like it . Slip into a belt holster and you don't know it's there. Light, compact , adjustable sights it's a winner in my book.

More particularly, S&W's "Kit Gun" has been around in one form or another since pre-WWII. It is a variation of the guns generally known as 22/32 Hand Ejector Revolvers----22/32 referring to .22 caliber guns built on .32 caliber frames------and this isn't in the correct section, but don't lose any sleep over that!
