It's good news, yes, but it is not all the news.

The NZ government has spent billions (about 50 so far and counting) on keeping the economy of 5 million going. Income support ends in another month then there is expected to be a surge in unemployment higher than the GFC. It is expected that it will take up to 30 years to repay this debt.

Our borders are closed to all except returning citizens and residents. For an economy that if 40% built on tourism that will have effects downstream.

Economists are predicting some dire consequences in 2021. I am not sure they are 100% correct (crystal balls come without guarantees or certificates of accuracy) but there will be pain for all to come. Tax increases are high on the list of early predictions.

We shall see, in the meantime Fortress New Zealand will continue on it's merry way.

102 days and it's back

After 102 days after our last case of community transmission Covid-19, the virus has returned.

Four members of a family in Auckland have tested positive for the virus. This is despite very strict border controls where returning citizens and residents have been placed into isolation and quarantine when positive results are returned through regular testing.

Auckland is in a lockdown for the next three days while contact tracing and the extent of the spread is carried out.

You can replace the billions with trillions here and unfortunately this virus is still running wild here, unlike your country.
