Knives

Looking for some input on knives, looking for a spring assisted folder, preferably 440 stainless or better with good locking and grip properties. 3-4" blade, tanto or drop point to be a switch off to my Snap On Ken Onion design made by Kershaw. Now I know you get what you pay for but don't really want to spend more than about $100-125. Any suggestions.....

As far as blade steels go, S30V is worth the extra money. I would not bother with 440. With an assisted opener, I believe you'll have to pay more than $125 for a high quality product. A friend of mine recently bought a Benchmade assisted opener. It is of excellent quality and I would not buy a lesser product.

I am a Buck fan. I have a Buck, Rush B-290-PL T-0, spring assisted folder. All stainless handle, with the Buck steel blade, 3". It works great. It has a little lock below the trigger that works easily and stays locked in your pocket. And if I remember right it cost about $60.00 give or take. bought it in '04

I carry a Terry Huang 1911 knife from Ultimate Knives in Vancouver, Canada. I'm so impressed with it, I've ordered 6 others as gifts. The stocks on this knife fit a 1911/Commander perfectly and the opening button is the same as on the guns. I carry a tricked up Commander everyday and a Remora 2-mag carrier. In one of the slots, I carry a spare mag and in the other, I carry the knife. Terry provides a very nice clip and screw with each knife and for those who prefer such installation is a no brainer. My blade is finished in a coating which looks identical to the flat black on my Commander. Both now wear stocks from Altamont that match. I'll try to get a pic of the Commander and knife up, but, until then, here's an example: Style is the same, blade finish and stocks on mine differ.

Benchmade 890, just checked Amazon and the price hit's your mark. Great 154cm blade, smooth G-10 grips which seem to fit my hand well. This has been my EDC for about a year, and nothing has managed to pull it out of my pocket. Finally, if it matters to you it's made here in the USA.

Final note, I have yet to play with one, but Benchmade now has a assisted opener which uses the axis lock of Griptilian fame. I'm sure it's worth a look.

That's what I have now, while I love the nonslip property of the handle everyday use is tearing up the pockets in my pant's. I mean hey 80 grit is great for a grip but looking for something softer and easier on the clothes.

I have several Cold Steel knives that are great bargains and truly deliver more then expected for the cost. They tend to be simple fixed blades, that hold a edge well and are shocking reasonable in price. That being said there is much that can fail on a assisted opener, and you said from the beginning "you get what you pay for", thus if the price is to good I would have concern as to long term quality. In short if you are looking for a knife which may be needed to remove yourself from a jam, I would keep looking.

The other side of the Cold Steel coin as it is, they do not always have great prices. Their catalog lists a Loveless style Sub Hilt Fighter "black bear classic" at a price in the $350 range. For that price I can find you a custom maker who will deliver a knife your grandkids will enjoy.

Yes I'm a "knife snob", and to continue your prior comment "free advise is worth what you paid for it"... just my two pennys.

Take a look at the kershaw Leek. Nice and smooth, very slim, works great if you're in dress slacks a lot. Love mine.

I bought two Benchmade knives this year and really like them both. They are very high quality. The first one I bought is a BM 707 Sequel it is very light and easy to carry, but not spring assisted. It has the axis lock which I love. It's the best lock I have ever used. The other knife is a BM 580 Barrage. It is spring assisted and a little bigger than the Sequel. I also has the axis lock. I can't say enough good about the axis lock. Don

After weighing some options, looking at pricing and availability as well as reviews and other input, I decided on getting two knives instead of one. Bought a Kershaw Leek black and a Cold Steel TiLite w/zytel grip. See which one I like better for everyday carry.
