I was looking around on GB and found a M586 advertised as having a pinned barrel !!!! To my knowledge there should not be any L-Frames with pinned barrels......just curious what others think this really is!!! My thoughts are this could not have left the factory like that.

I enhanced a couple of the pics on my computer and the barrel "does" appear to be pinned...............am I missing something???? Pics also show magna grips where they should be targets.

It's an active auction that ends in less than 24 hours. The seller doesn't have a good feedback record IMO, but thats beside the point. The auction is #161280314 (MODS feel free to delete if this # should not be posted)

I'm no expert by any means, but I'm not sure it's an L-frame or a 586. It looks to me like a nice, older K frame that's been rebarrelled with a full-lug barrel.

One monkey.....check
One drill press..check
One pin............check

Let the show begin.

I'm inclined to agree, he doesn't list a s/n, but this is a -1 and prolly a couple/few years into the M586 production, so any "transition" aspect is probably manufactured by the owner in this case.
Never seen or heard of any L frame with a pinned barrel, since - afterall - it was the L frame series that introduced the crush fit barrel methodology.....

I like it . I might go looking for a Model 19 with a cracked forcing cone . If it was a four inch , I might take my chances and poach on Woodsltc's auction .

Looks like the result of some tinkering to me. Someone probably thought pinned barrels HAD to be better.

Someone also milled off the ramp front sight and pinned in a patridge blade.

I asked the seller what the serial number was. His response was:

Makes one wonder.

I wonder why he does not want to give a straight answer .
Just from looking at the pics and his other items , I see several guns in his store I would take a look at ..

Another thing I noticed, was that it has magna stocks. According to the SCSW, the 586's came with Goncalo Alves target stocks. Not that a 586 can't have magnas, just that it's just another oddity.

Now look what we did to each other ! We talked ourselves into being scared and somebody else got it at a reasonable price .
I am going back to my spring loaded postion , When asked Should you buy ? Yes , is the only answer . When in doubt , buy it and tell your wife it is a present .

I say in two weeks someone will post on here about a rare, factory pinned, M-586 and ask what its worth & if its ok to shoot +P in it. :D

Non-Catalog guns

Before Smith & Wesson ticked her off by charging her $50 for a factory defected sight she had over $3,000 in Non-Ca talFFL businessoged revolvers. That she had left over from an FFL business.

I was just getting ready to post this question. I was the second highest bidder, I thought no matter what, a .357 is worth around $400. My understanding is that there are no pinned L-frames, so far I guess WE still believe this. I wish/hope we can get the true scoop on this one.

I was about to bid several times . If the little gun was otherwise sound , I thought it was pretty neat even if it was put together from parts . I liked it better than the Smolts I remember reading about . These days there would be no place to hide for the person putting a Python barrel on a Smith . Yes it was called Smolt . When you put Python first and Smith second , it sounds like a word already being used for something else altogether .

When someone on an auction site will not give me a straight answer, I will never do business with him.

Once I was going to bid on a nice custom Colt Commander. Since he didn't mention it, I asked the seller if he knew who did the gunsmithing. His answer to me was, "Yes."

A jerk like this would also tell you, "I never said the bore wasn't rusted." or "I said 'as is' and since the picture didn't show any internal parts, you can't complain that there isn't any."

Trick answers are deceptive answers and sellers like this need to be avoided.

S&W went to the crush fit barrel in 1958. The pin was kept as a "tradition" until circa 1981 even though there was no need for it. I would think early L frames from 1980-81 could very well have pinned barrels but I have none from that era so can't look. Maybe somebody else will do that for us and let us know?

A neighboring sheriffs office bought a bunch 0f M65s when they first stopped using the barrel pins. They had several instances of barrels shooting loose, so the entire lot of them was sent back to S&W and retrofitted with barrel pins. Something similar may have occurred with this revolver.
