Solid actor with an instantly recognizable voice.

He also provided one of the great quotes on Peckinpah (I‘ve edited ):

„There are three or four or five directors who are sheer genius in what they do, and Sam is certainly one of those. But he also relies a great deal on the people around him. And as much as I think Sam's a genius, I also think he's a (bleeping) idiot. But then, it takes a genius to (bleep) up in the idiotic ways he does. Everybody hates Sam; everybody loves Sam.“

Being a die hard classic movie fan, he was one of my "Oh yeah ... THAT guy" character actors. He showed up in so many rolls that I was encouraged to memorize his name. So we've lost our "two-bit, red-necked peckerwood." I especially liked his number as the county commissioner in "Casino." I may be overstating it, it seems our actors are passing on too close together, more so than in recent years. In the last few days, Jones, Caan and Sirico. Childish, but it troubles me...
