I don't know if this goes in this form or not but have seen and posted to a few on this forum.

I know a least a few of you guys got them and wanted to know if you are having any [problems tracking .223 bullets. I am having problems with 55gr BTHPs. I switched to my rifle with out a brake on it and have moved the unit out to 10" from the barrel side ways and some times get a reading and most of the time a tracking error. I thought maybe it was because I had the shooting stall by the wall but the wall is smooth and no closed then the floor. I have mounted a small laser tube in the aiming slot wired to a USB cable as my battery pack has two USB ports to see if maybe the unit is not aimed good. All hand guns rounds read perfect. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have no direct experience with that combo - haven't run ARs indoors and not at all since my very firxt (successful) test. With that said all I can do is throw some ideas out there . . .

If the LR didn't react at all, that would mean it didn't hear the shot. If the LR told you it didn't track, then it heard the shot but missed the projectile. So . . .

If your LR was still set to handgun speed, it may hear the shot but should not ever pick up the rifle's bullet. But worth checking anyhow.

Can I assume your projectile distance was set to 12" when the unit was moved out 10" from the barrel? Did you try setting it to 18"? This MAY affect the unit's geometry causing it to miss the projectile. Not likely since you imply a braked rifle worked fine.

Finally the unit's aim shouldn't have been off given your earlier pistol success and a targeting laser, but . . . aim is both horizontal and vertical. Still unlikely, but worth checking.

Thanks Twoboxer the settings are all right but I have not tried the 18" distance. I did get 3 strings of 10 shots run with the muzzle brake rifle but it took 15 shots each string to get the 10 recorded. I was set at 12" with the brake about 4" ahead of the LR. It is the pistol shots that it reads everytime and the 8 strings of 10 were shot with a 22LR and I have run strings all the way up to .45. Going to try some non BT 223 bullets and try the 18 inch setting then call CS if that don't work. Thanks for the reply.

The fact that you always picked up 22LR but only 2/3rds of the 223 is an interesting fact. What are the differences?

The 223 of course runs >1500fps faster than the slightly smaller 22LR. And could it be there was more play in the relative position of your rifle's muzzle than the pistols?

I'd look carefully at the aiming. I know you have a laser on it, but with the LR's "open sights" . . . I had more success looking DOWN at the LR's sighting notch from 2'-3' away than any other approach.

It was easier for me to see the imaginary line it draws was actually pointed at the target. I'm amazed at how far off I can get when using the notch from close up as if it were an eyepiece.

With the horizontal alignment taken care of, I just make sure the LR is perpendicular to the rifle barrel when I'm shooting.

The last time I tried sighting the LR I used a small 6 inch tube laid in the notch like the LR website recommends. I have not used the laser yet. Doing like you said it tracked 22lr rounds all the way to the target at 20 yards the length of our indoor range. I am thinking that with the handgun barrel less then 6" from the side of the LR that the bullet enters the radar cone sooner and maybe the aim is easier to get right. I will get it it may take some time and help but this is part of my enjoyment working on stuff like this. I shoot at least 4 days a week and playing with this stuff help keep up my interest. Thanks for more ideas.

Maybe the shape of those boattails is "stealthier"... There's a reason stealth aircraft and the Zumwalt have all those angles.

Magload, these comments sound all too familiar lol. Without goals, sometimes shooting becomes just making noise. And my "retrievers" are Siberian Huskies

I just found another condition that apparently causes the LR to "not track" bullets. Hope it's also your problem.

Short version: If concussive blast or similar causes the LR to shake, the more violent the shake it seems the less likely it is to pick up a bullet's flight.

What happened:

- Firing 30-06 27" barrel with muzzle break from a bench using a rest/rear bag

- Muzzle extended about 10" beyond the end of the bench.

- LR on it's bench mount with half the bench mount also extending off the bench so that the LR unit was right on the end of the bench. Secured with a c-clamp to the bench. The left side of the LR was about 8" from the right side of my barrel.

The LR missed 4 or 5 straight shots no matter how I adjusted the parameters. I finally noticed the LR was shaking with each shot.

I pulled the rifle and the LR further back on the bench so that the LR had all 4 of the mount's feet on the bench. Then moved the LR further away from the rifle, now 12".

The LR didn't shake and it recorded every shot thereafter.

Thanks that is something to look at. I put another mounting screw up by the front edge of the plate so the whole plate will sit on the bench. I was using a mono pod I made from a old tripod and it clamps to the bench. I may have be getting vibrations. I haven't tested in a while as I been working on groupings with my Victory.
