Laptop computer question

Not sure where you get your information, but in the last twenty five years, I have never paid a dime for updates on my Windows machines. All I know is that Apple products are priced well above most Windows products.

I had iPads and Apple phones, but always had a home based Windows PC and had to switch due to the lack of compatibility. I can simply plug my android phone into my PC and add or download images, documents by simple drag and drop. Same with my Samsung tablets. Simplify is my goal, and I will always have a home PC for storage and security, so no more Apple products for me.

Oh, almost forgot that Apple quit providing updates for my iPad a couple years ago and rendered it useless!

Upgrades yea they are free. Update to a newer OS and get ready to pull out your cc. Depending on the grade, you can spend anywhere from $100 on up to a whole heck of a lot. My Macs upgraded the OS many times and didn't cost me a cent.

The Windows PC I'm currently using magically updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 overnight some time ago. It cost me nothing. The difference is that Mac/Apple does smaller more frequent OS updates.

Yes they did offer free upgrade for Windows 10. Limited time offer.

Fact remains Windows stink.

Buy what you want to start with - upgrading is increasingly less common in favor of replacement, All brands are made in the same slave ships off the coast of China. I have had good luck with Dell. Good luck!

While you're at it, pick up an additional small laptop bag. Perfect for packing your Sub 2000 and a couple of 30 round mags.

Other than the short free upgrade to Windoze10 period I've had to pay for every new version of Windoze starting at 1, 3.2, 95, XP, NT, 2000, 6, 7, 8

You have to plug in? All I have to do is get my iPhone within Bluetooth range to sync automatically.

The only time that is true is if the hardware in the old iPad cannot support features in the new IOS. I have an iPad 2 on the desk that has not had a software update in many years that I use daily.

Windows 10 is very stable as were/are Windows 7 and 8. Previous versions were somewhat less stable. I dual booted Windows and Ubuntu for a couple of years, but I finally got tired of playing with Linux and went back to just Windows. My Windows 10 machines get rebooted only when Windows updates are installed and they reboot the machines automagically. I haven't needed to reboot Windows due to instability issues or BSOD since XP.

I definitely cannot say the same for the handheld computers at work that use Windows CE embedded. That OS sucks big time, and has to be rebooted constantly. Thankfully they are being phased out in favor of newer units that run on Android. Those perform much better, but not all our applications have been ported for Android yet so we still need the Windows units.

I have been totally Apple free since 1980 after briefly embracing the old Apple II back in the days.

I would recommend Dell, Acer, or Lenovo. I'm okay with HP for desktops, but not for laptops - seen too many issues with them.

Based on your stated needs, are you sure you can't use a high end tablet? I do the things you list, and use various Microsoft Office products, on my iPad. Bought a blue tooth keyboard, and "poof" i have a laptop.
If battery life is a problem, get a power bank.

I have two MacBook Pros. Both I bought used. One is a 2011 vintage factory refurb that I bought 5+ years ago from the Apple store. The other is a 2012, that I bought at a pawn shop - cheap - like $150 cheap. I've not had any problems with either.

The only thing that I did to the pawn shop MB was take it to the Apple Store and had them wipe it reinstall the latest OS and check for problems - none found.

I have no problem buying a used Mac.

I like Lenovo. A couple of years ago I bought myself and my mother a couple of Lenovo IdeaPad 130-15ASTs.

It was reasonably priced through Amazon and has worked very well for my intended purposes (web browsing, remote DSLR control, and backup to my desktop).

I specifically picked it because it had an electro-mechanical hard drive. At the time, most of the affordable laptops that had SSDs had drives of laughably low capacity.

My only objection (which I should have seen beforehand) was it's limit of 16gig of RAM. Had I noticed that, I probably would have spent a little more money to be able to upgrade to 32gig.

I won't buy Dell because of my experience as a technician, especially a contract Dell service technician. When I was dealing with Dell, their QA was ABYSMAL. I worked for a vendor and solution provider who was a Dell shop. I once installed a PC that was going to be used in the shipping and receiving department of a filter factory. I set up the PC and installed the software they had on hand. There was more software on order that hadn't come yet. I was scheduled to come out in a couple of days and install that. The computer was DEAD by the time I got there.

I had another site that was a high end clothing retailer (think $200 belts). They used a bunch of the little mini computers for the sales associates. Those things were dropping like flies in absolutely the most benign environment imaginable.

A friend called me in to help with one of his customers, a lawyer who bought a Dell laptop. Neither of us could get the thing running right. We both kept calling Dell for warranty assistance, but got ZERO cooperation. Eventually what they did was keep putting us off until they could run out the clock on the warranty.

Not a fan.
