Laser grips on a 640

Ok I admit, I getting old. I am looking at Crimson Trace lasergrips for my 640. The LG-405 caught my eye because they appear "shorter" on grip length and have that cushion back strap piece. Anyone use anything else and what your take after using them awhile?

I am thinking of the same thing on a 642 for the same reason. Interested in comments of CT 405 or 305 users.

I have the original issue CT305's on my 642CT. They are just about the neatest thing since sliced bread; accurate beyond my wildest expectations. I've considered a set for my M1911, but I like the 642 so well as a carry gun, and I shoot it so well, that there's no rush.

I think they are terrific. I have over-50 eyes, and have CT grips on a couple of K- and L-frames as well as two J-frames. While they are helpful on the larger guns, they really transform the J-frame from a point-shooting weapon into a gun that will hold surprisingly tight groups at 25 yards (of course the gun was always capable). The 405 is a nice compromise between concealability and comfort. I think you will be pleased!

I put CT grips on all my pistols and they are fantastic. The 405's are smaller and help with concealability. If you are carrying in a pocket then get the 405's. The 305's although bigger soak up more recoil and I use these on my 640-1 for belt carry/IWB. Either model works great!

The 305's on my 642 will let me put 5 shots into a half dollar sized grouping firing from the hip at 15 yards.

I have CT grips on my 625 - this is now my house gun - but I didn't like the way that you have to alter your grip if you don't want the laser activated. I bought a Lasermax for my J frame (the factory said they are not planning on making a version for any other size Smith frame)and it is better than CT in some respects, worse in others. For example, you can set the laser to either "strobe" or regular "straight" laser projection. The on/off switch is placed so you can activate it easily with either hand. The bad part: the laser activates very easily - too easily in my opinion. What they need to do is have a dedicated on/off switch located on the bottom of the grips (like CT) and they would be perfect. They are about at least $30.00 less than CT grips. Also, Lasermax places the laser high on the grips, so it projects along the top of the cylinder.

I've got Crimson Trace on my 649 and they have really improved my target aquisition. Plus I can shoot without my glasses and still hit the target

I have a set of CT Grips on my 640 and it came in quite handy when a "nice gentleman "pulled a sharpened screwdriver on me when caught trying to break into my car.Once I cleared holster I was on target and the laser caught his attention before he knew he was drawn on.The dot had him immeadiately stop his aggression.At the range,after some slight adjustments using the tool provided, the laser is dead on @ 50 feet.

I am 77, so am willing to use anything that helps. I have Crimson Trace grips on my Browning High Power and my S&W686+. I also have them on my 637 Airweight snubby, specifically the 305s (all they had five years ago). Even with standard pressure range loads, fifty rounds from that revolver beats my hand up more than a little bit: blisters on the web between my thumb and hand, trigger slap on my finger. For your hotcha snubby, I recommend the 405s. That little shock absorber at the top of the grip would solve my blister problem, but I'm too cheap to buy another set of CTs. I'd rather whimper.

As for utility, CTs are simply astounding. I practice 50% iron sights/50% Crimson Trace, but I know what I would use in a HD/SD situation: from extended arm stance to retention stance: Crimson Trace. Not recommended for iron bongs at 100 yards in the noonday sun.

I have a set for the S&W J-frame round butt. Mine are the smaller boot grip type with an open backstrap. They tend to hurt my arthritic right thumb's base knuckle when I fire anything more than a very mild .32 round. The back of the speed loader relief cutout area has a sharp edge that hurts when the revolver recoils. That is just in my case perhaps. If I were to buy another for that application, I would get the larger overmoulded type. That said, the only other complaint would be the cost. With my aged eyes, they are a great help and they have some real tactical advantages over conventional sights. They are expensive but well worth it if you have the $ in my opinion...

I have LG-405 lasergrips on all my J-frame carry guns--342, 442, 642, and the 640 pictured below. The short, thin profile of the 405 makes it perfect for concealed carry, and as others have mentioned the laser is a great aid for over-50 eyes. Even with the cushioned backstrap of the lasergrip the ultralight 342 still beats up my hand pretty badly, but I barely notice recoil at all on the 405-equipped 640.

I take it the 305 are akin to the stock grips in size and shape while the 405 are shorter nad somewhat thicker. That nice DC7 - I like it.

Actually the 405's are quite thin. I often wish they were just a bit thicker and more hand-filling, something like the Uncle Mike's boot grip. But then I suppose some of the concealability would be lost.

I agree with dc7. The recoil on my 640 isn't bad at all with 158gr magnum loads. The cushioned back strap works as advertised.

I have 1 pair of LG-405's that float between several J-frames, currently they are on my model 60 in 357 and will probably stay of them for some time now since I think they offer the most comfort of any grip for shooting 357 and with the laser to boot. CT has a real winner with these, however I do agree with DC7 in that sometimes I wish they were a bit more "filling" but they are leaps and bounds over the original all plastic ones.
