With mobs using lasers to disable and cause eye damage to LEO's I'm thinking of getting a pair or two.

Are any Leo's here being issued or buying laser resistant eye protection and if so what brand?

I'd be curious how a generalized pair would work. You could get a set that would work on a green laser or a red laser if you knew ahead of time the light color, but pretty sure a set that covered the whole spectrum would be dark black. You couldn't see out of them. Just thinking out loud. ETA - see I posted the same time as PatriotX.

Your might be right. I'd better consult with my lawyer before buying a pair.
Don't want to offend any SJW's using lasers to peacefully exercise their right to assemble.

Would somebody like to comment on the availability of these supposedly eye damaging lasers? It was my understanding that they are pretty hard to come by, for obvious reasons. For sure, being dazzled by any means is an unpleasant experience.

It’s not a one-size solution.

Different wavelengths hurt different parts of the eye, different colors best stopped by matching corollary color.

Perfect explanation of why I can see into the near UV. Both eyes done for cataracts. I have to wear the yellow goggles to use the UV flashlight when hunting scorpions or the view is washed out by a bright blue light.

Back about 20 years ago a company in Anchorage was selling lasers to be used for signaling aircraft. It was intended to be a survival tool and the red beam was rectangular in shape. Not sure how that all panned out.

They aren't that hard to come by. I don't want to post any links but you can get class 4 lasers cheap.

google "class 4 laser pointer for sale".

There are also IR lasers that can literally cook your your retina without you knowing what's happening!

At some point, I think high powered lasers going to be made illegal.

Yeah, I knew about the IR lasers. Some idiot in an M1 Abrams did it to a German civilian some years back using the laser rangefinder.

What I mean is that you can buy them! A buddy of mine bought one from China - cheap.

I can just see it now, "Assault Lasers" or those evil "Black Lasers with Large Capacity Batteries"!

The use of a laser by criminals has two components. The first is that it is being used as part of a target acquisition method. I'm aware of a few incidents in which LEOs were so targeted and the only reason that the offender is alive is that they could not be identified quickly enough. (Remember that self-defense as a matter of law is pre-emptive.)

The other is use to blind someone by eye damage - that would be assault 1 here and carries a pretty hefty sentence, even under our wimpy sentencing laws.

Legally, lasers fall under the purview of the FDA. Anything beyond 5mW output is already illegal as a ‘pointer’ device.

It’s not difficult to repurpose a Blu-ray or game console laser into something that could cause eye damage, just like it’s not difficult to make a zip gun for those handy with tools.

The laws won’t protect anyone from those lasers any more than they would from illegal guns.
