Has anyone ever herd of Law Enforcement Agencies modifying pistols to DAO. I found a 586-3 in a Pawn Shop with this story behind the modification, they said it was once a Dept of Corrections pistol!

Los Angeles Police Department went to DAO only in all it's duty and off-duty revolvers in 1968. This was effected by grinding off the trigger and hammer SA sear notches.

Thanks for the information, did not want to buy a pistol that someone screwed up.

That screw up is easy to correct with a new hammer, if you get the gun cheap enough. It is an easy swap out.

LAPD went DAO in 1968, NYPD did 20 years later with the switch to the NY-1.

I went ahead and bought the 586-3 revolver for $280.00 plus Tax, BFF81XX, Thanks for all the help. I will check the Local Gun Shows for the parts to repair.

That's a good price for a 586 in good condition.

You might want to remove the sideplate and examine the action first to confirm that the trigger and/or the hammer is modified. If the SA sears are ground off both, you need to replace both pieces. If only one needs replacement, you can save some money.

Hi:
The "Double-Action" only was an effort to stop "Accidental Discharges" that occurs with Officers. This was fairly successful. Prior to this "Modification" the most dangerous place was the locker room at shift change.
---THEN---the Agencies changed to Semi-Autos!!

That resulted in DA semi-autos.
