I read a recent thread where some folks were using Lemi Shine to clean brass. Are you using the detergent or the rinse?

I asked my wife to grab some at the grocery store but she bought the rinse which is like Finish dishwasher rinse aid.

Does it work any better than vinegar and salt? Probably smells a lot better.:)

Thanks

No, she got the 8 oz liquid squirt bottle which is Lemi Shine Rinse
I looked on line and I would think the canister as you say would be more like dishwasher detergent.

She got the stuff on the far left picture, should it be the middle stuff?

A word to the wise is in order. It really doesn't matter what she got, if you want something different, just go get it yourself! ;) Saves a lot of explaining later on.

"Didn't I get the right thing?" yada, yada, yada. Much, much simpler to just go get it yourself! :)

Can't answer about the "Lemi Shine" 'cause, I just use the same ole same ole, Lyman tumbler with Lyman Treated Walnut hulls mixed 50/50 with Lyman Treated Corn Cob media. Have used that for a few decades now and still works just fine!

there is iron in the words of wisdom above...however, yup, you want the powder in the middle....

Thanks. I will get some tomorrow I can return it or just keep it and use it in the DW. She just happened to go to the store today and I was obviously not clear in my request as to what I thought I wanted since I had no idea what it was or if they even had it. I obviously was in error.

Now bow your heads and recite:

I am a man, but I can change,if I have to, I guess.
When all else fail. play dead:D

First time I've heard of LemiShine... now I'm interested!

Is it used as a soaking cleaner before drying the brass and tumbling?

I got a kick out of their product line when I came across the ReMi - Reverses Mistakes:

ReMi Reverses Mistakes - Eliminates problems at the source. Its natural enzyme formula safely & permanently removes stains & odors and even contains non-resoiling cleaning capabilities.

Get it? [HomerSimpsonVoice] DOH! [/HomerSimpsonVoice] Re Mi

Some folks "wash" their brass rather than tumble it. Or wash it if really dirty like range stuff.

A common cleaner is 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 tabls salt in enough water to make 1 gal. Soak it for 15-20 min and rinse real well with fresh water. You can save the solution.
It cleans the brass but it's not as bright and shiny as tumbling. If you do clean it, your tumble media lasts twice as long.

Lots of people do not change their tumble media often enough. It is full of all kinds of nasty stuff and it's cheap. Works better and faster when clean.

I use the lemishine on really bad range brass, for a day or two soak..It also worked great on a burner for a WW2 pack stove that was corroded and had alot of carbon build up.. I don't pick up much brass anymore but at a time when I was real short on 357 brass it came in handy

Did a little test. It would be more dramatic if I had some really nasty brass but I don't.

I mixed 3 tablespoons of Lemi Shine in 1 gal of water. Shaken not stirred;)

Put a few previous fired 45 ACP in the mix and let sit for 10-15 minutes. As soon as the brass went in the solution you could see it brighten a bit. Can not see it real well in the pictures.

It takes off the carbon and firing residue and are clean enough for me to reload.

Is it any better than the vinegar, salt mixture?? I say No, it's a little brighter but it is not worth the expense of $4 for this little container when vinegar and salt are so cheap.

Next trip to the range I will find some real old nasty stuff and test it on that.

Before the State came and cut down all our citrus trees to prevent the outbreak/spread of citrus canker I could have just used lemon. orange and grapefruit skins. They have done away with the program as the storms spread it so much there are no healthy trees around anymore.:( I digress.

Lemi Shine has fruit acids in it; probably citric acid. You can read alot about citric acid at this link.
Citric acid brass cleaner - Cast Boolits

Yes, that's what started this. It works well but I think the vinegar. salt solution is better due to the cost. I have also used a diluted phosphoric acid (Lime remover cleaner) solution.

Vinegar (acetic acid) is safe and cheap

I don't have any crappy looking brass, but I'm going to tumble one batch in some walnut, then size and decap, then soak in Lemi-Shine, and follow with Lyman corn cob with NuFinish just for kicks. It ought to be effin BRILLIANT!!!!!!

Tumbling media

The posts I read which referenced lemi shine were in a mix using stainless steel media in a tumbler,.

What are the reasons for cleaning your brass? I have never cleaned any in 35 years of reloading

SWMBO prefers shooting "pretty" ammo and what makes SWMBO happy, makes me happy. :D
In addition, I prefer handling decontaminated brass while reloading.

Some wash their brass while others tumble it, but I do both.
Of course, I only reload straight wall handgun cases.

I wash it using the old NRA water, vinegar, salt and detergent formula to get rid of the lead and powder residue.
Then I tumble it in media spiked with Nu-Finish to make it shine and slide in and out of the carbide decap/resize die without leaving brass and crud behind.

Does the "pretty" ammo I make shoot any better? Probably not.
Could I make more ammo if I didn't pre-proccess the cases as much? Undoubtedly yes.
Is the level of Lead in my blood abnormally high? No.
Am I going to change? Probably not. ;)

Recommend soaking in Lemi-Shine before first tumble to cut back on the amount of airbone lead contaminates generated during tumbling.
