I'm thinking about doing a little polishing on my 5906. I kind of like the ones I've seen that polish the flats of the slide and the larger area of the frame.

If you have a polished 3rd gen could you please post some pictures so I can get some ideas.

Not mine but I kind of like this look that I found on the internet.

OK...This is a true story. I walked into a local GS a few years ago and this guy had come in to try to sell several 3rd Gen Police Trade-ins that he had polished. Lucky me, I happened to have my camera in the car and couldn't leave without taking these poor and fast shots. Don't polish your Aluminum frame it will oxidize. Polish your slide and then you can have your frame nickel or chrome plated to match.

Here's mine. A highly polished 5946 done by me. It was a beater police trade in and after about 80 hours of standing and polishing this is the finish result. I like it cas it stands apart from its siblings.

I try to keep an open mind and the guns show a lot of craftsmanship, but, jeeze, these are scary!

Beater 4566TSW I overhauled last year.
Slide flats alone are polished and then only to remove the remnants of the laser etched billboard, otherwise I'd have left it alone.

The really shiny bits are all on the inside

Bill, how did you polish the flats on that 4566? I've got a 4506-1 I'm thinking of doing that to.

A honing plate and varying grades of silicon carbide abrasive paper (wet/dry). Use water with a touch of dish detergent to keep the abrasive paper wet. Depending on how rough the surface is you can start out with 180 or 220 mesh to true up the flats. Then work your way on up to 600 or 800 grit or even on to 1000 or 1500 mesh for a mirror finish.

Take care to work both sides equally, I usually go 25 or 50 strokes then flip the part and do the other side. Rinse off the tailings and repeat until I've gotten the desired results.

Along with caring for my plane irons these are much handier than a granite block for when I need to true up and polish something small like slide flats.

Just to give you an idea of what it looks like, here's an old Colt slide sitting on a honing plate that has 15 micron (800 grit) sharpening film on it.

I actually posted the photos as a joke...you guys showed a lot of restraint....200 hits before anyone wanted to step out. Certainly not my cup of tea, but LE Trades were ridiculously cheap at the Store referred to and there were counters full of them. I think it's sad and I doubt there was much of a market for them...... Zebulon

I've thought of picking up one of the 3rd gen with the nasty billboards, but couldn't get past the billboard, thanks for the tips, Master Chief! I think I'll get one now and try it.

Does anyone have a factory polished 5906?
SWSC shows a product code 108225 for 1993 that has "High polish frame with wood grain Xenoy grips".

I am the one that polished the 5906 in the first picture. It was a police trade that I bought from CDNN and someone had started the polishing job and I finished it. They were covering some scuffs in the finish. I was going to post this pic but I recognized it to be the one I posted earlier. I still have it and another one like it and two 6906s. They are the favorite 9mm models I have owned and that was a bunch over the years.

I like that special 5906, its a nice custom touch. I bet alot of things were and still are said about custom engraving. I like it for what it is, a custom gun, just like some people like polished guns and some like blued. Different strokes for different fokes. (and no its not mine) Now the wood grips are somthing I would like to get my hands on.
