This year I bought a 586 with 8 3/8 barrel and adjustable front sight. I like to see other S&W revolvers with this sight package.

Doesn't anyone else have one? Or do the rest of you just not like them. I thought it was different and thought that S&W developed them for silhouette shooting and they we probably somewhat popular to a limited crowd. Let me know your thoughts.

That's a nice looking 586. I don't really understand the adjustable front sight with an adjustable rear sight. Enlighten me on the purpose.

Guess they weren't very popular over there. They were here in Australia - once upon a time when Smith still made them. I have 2, a 586 6", and 686 6". They were especially popular here in Oz for service match. Service match is kinda like your PPC, but allowed adjustable front as well as rear. The reason the adjustable front was popular is it allowed a simple repeatable adjustment for each yardage, same as the aristocrat rears do for PPC. Service match here is about as popular now as PPC is over there these days!
EDIT : I bulged the barrel on my 586 about 3 years ago, it had well in excess of 100,000 rounds through it. It took me 3 years to find one, but about 6 months ago, I found a new 6" AFS barrel. Couldn't believe my luck. Snatched it up and will restore the old girl when i get a chance.

I have a H&R with factory installed adjustable front sight. When I get back from DC latter this week I'll post a picture. H&R was installing adjustable front sights on some fo their revolvers in the 1940's, when did S&W finally catch on? ;D ;D

As he explained above the front sight has 4 settings so if you shoot competition that requires you to shoot 4 diffrent distances you zero the gun for each specific distance and use one of the four set points on the sight for each one. There's a wheel on the sight and as you move it to the new distance it clicks into the next setting. As the shooter finishes shooting the stage at one distance he makes the adjustment for the next stage and he's ready to go and can hold directly on the bulleye at the new distance.

Once set it will work but you have to always shoot the same load in the gun for it to be repeatable as I'm sure competiton shooters do anyway.

I could see some utility on the .500 Mags. There is such a dramatic shift in point of impact from heavy slugs at low velocities to heavy slugs at high velocities that the rear sight may not always provide enough adjustment range to take care of it. Don

Thanks guys, I missed the first one I saw on GB and was begining to think I was the only one that thought they were really cool and functional for competitive shooting and hunting.
