Let's see your U.S. Model 1917 S&Ws!

New Here

More more more. Come on guys dig those pictures out, cant get enough of a good thing. New here, I am, looking forward to learning and maybe teaching a few things. I didnt know these guns had such a following. Glad to see it. I own both a S&W 1917 and a Colt 1917 and enjoy shooting both of them. I dont own anything I cant shoot. Most of the guns I own have started out a gunsmithing projects. I paid 125.oo for the Colt and the Smith has a good story behind it. Im afraid I havent learned how to post pictures yet,but I will. Also both gun are stripped of their finish at this time. Im doing a little make over on them at present. So when I post you might not drull over them, but you will(If you are a shooter)

first post, we have got a few old guns been looking for loose value so can figure fair price to sell, this has a nice heisner denver holster, serial number under the barrel is not sure old eyes but think 131480 second number might be 5 or 8, now seee if I can post picture,

am thinking about putting this on gun broker, or driving to tulsa, or just selling cheap to local guy who will take to Tulsa

Here's a pic of mine. I bought it back in 1989 when I had an FFL. Paid 130 for it at that time. I had a new barrel installed a few months ago, and this is a pic I shot on the first trip to the range afterwards. It still shoots quite a bit low, but these are pretty light target loads too. The point of aim here is right about where the front sight is. My plan is to next look into rebluing and then a set of stag grips.

OK, this may be blasphemy, but I think the 1917 would be a cool looking gun with a 4" barrel. I'd like nothing better than to find a trasher 1917 with a bulged barrel that I could shorten. Does anybody have pics of one?

My Smith has a 3 1/2 inch barrel. I didnt cut it, got it that way many years ago when no one was collecting them. Yes it does look good. As soon as i figure out how to post pictures I will. Sometimes looking at some of these old guns that have been altered, I think there should be a collectors classifcation for these fine old guns. The probem with that is to many of them are still in use doing just what they were designed to do. I have a question, does anyone here know what size the bore is on a S&W chambered for the .45 Colt. I know that Colt used .454 in their New Service and SAA before WW2 and .452 in their 1917 and the SAA since WW2 I am new to the S&W. The 1917 S&W and 1917 Colt are all .452 as is the 1911 Colt and because of the .45 A.C.P. used in these guns. I hand load my ammo and this is very useful information to me.

Gen. Colt,

I have a 2nd Model HE in .45 Colt that shipped from the factory in 1917. The muzzle measures .452.

Here is mine number 568XX. She is a US model and shoots Auto rim or full moons just fine. If it wasn't for a scratch on the left side plate, she'd be 90% or better.

Ah,, White Coyote. Had breakfast today with Barney at the Mayberry . Yep thats what mine looks like, only I still retain the hammer and full guard, and someone thought mine would look better chromed. Still cant post a picture. Truth to tell I just got mine rockin and rollin with in the last month. I didnt care much for this gun all way around, but mosty it had a trigger pull that required the use of a come-a-long. I replaced the rebound spring in this revolver(The one it had came from the front of an F-150) and now I know what Skeeter Skelton, Elmer Keith and that batch of writers so long ago raved about when writing about the prewar hand ejectors, I like this gun. She's a slick nickel now. Oh White Coyote looks as if we reside in the same area. Sometimes I shoot at the firing line in Canton. By the way is your grip frame been rounded, mine has, shorten too a bit

You people have inspired me to take some pictures of my U.S. Army Model 1917s. In the first picture the one on top is SN 910xx. It looks to be unfired and would be 100% except for some moisture damage to the barrel and sight due to poor storage. On the bottom is my shooter,SN 359xx.

Here is a view of the other side but with SN 359xx on top and SN 910xx on the bottom.

For a comparison, here is SN 910xx pictured with my Colt Model 1917, SN 2096xx.

i wish i could post a pic. of mine but can't now. my 1917 would be the last gun to go , i would sell my m-19 instead

Rush,

Great guns!

And THAT is the correct box that I NEED. If any of you have an extra one like it please send me a PM.

Thanks Bettis1 for the info. Sorry I didnt thank you sooner but I got distracted by picture of a nice gun. Im getting that way again, BRush, it just not fair. Two really, two Smiths in that good of condition, and you can throw in 1917 Colt to boot. If I didnt have two 1917 Colts and 1 Smith, well I'd be down right jealous. Bought mine over 35 years ago. Mine have been working guns for as long as Ive had them. I dont think I have 400$ tied up in all three.

Here is my odd ball 1917 Commercial chambered in .45 Colt Ctg. instead of .45 acp. The barrel was replaced with a 6 1/2" barrel. All the serial numbers match barrel, cylinder, ejector star and grips. This was no hack job done on a .455 revolver. It shoots pretty well...at least better than me.

This brazilian has been posted on a different thread or two in the past by it's previous owner but I recently purchased it and thought I'd show it off with it's new faux ivory grips. It shoots good, has a great trigger, and is really in decent overall shape.

Reworked 17

my reworked 1917 is a low number 1917 22xx that has been refinished, adjustable sights, modified to short action.

would like to know who did the work.
