Let's talk Mountain Guns

Here's the one I had:

I also hungered for a blue steel Mountain Gun at one time. This 25-13 is the result. I apologize for PC hole in the side, but that's the only kind they had then.

That hole doesn't bother me and I don't bother it! I read somewhere the mountain gun can be special ordered, truth or hogwash?

…My favorite "Mountain Gun" is the one S&W never built. A blue steel MG in 45 ACP…
My often seen (and shot) M25-2 with a shortened Model 1950 tapered barrel, round butt, action and trigger tuned, fine bead blast and then blued. S&W factory RB "Combat" stocks, bought used and abused, refinished by me.

Dave…

…I couldn't find a Mountain Gun, so I had one made…

I did the same thing, sort of… Way back in the 80s, I was an LEO and really liked the idea of a 4", tapered barrel, N frame for a duty revolver. (Blame Elmer Keith!). By that time I was over the need for magnums and decided the perfect packing revolver would have the above features and chamber the 45 ACP cartridge. I searched in vain for a 4", Model 1950. What to do? I built one.

I had a 4", Model 28-2, so I shipped the barrel off for boring and rifling. I had on hand a cylinder for a Model 1950 or Model 1955 so I installed it. I rounded the grip frame by removing all the metal that was proud of a pair of K frame, round butt Magnas and changed the frame lug. When the barrel got back, I installed it and adjusted the gap. A little fussing with the front sight and I had my revolver.

It was the second 4" tapered barrel, ACP, revolver I had, the first was this 1917 I customized.

Several more 4", tapered barreled, 45 ACP, N frames have come along since then!
