Just looked at a 4" 66 no dash at LGS. Supposedly retired LEO from Long Island sold it to them. Had Target grips with serial number lightly electro penciled on bottom of grip. Grips did not number to the gun but were in nice condition and were period correct. Did not have a lot of wear for a LE gun but there was ever so slight signs of someone prying side cover off and some wear/scratches on muzzle. Screws were in good shape. Everything was tight and forcing cone and top strap had no signs of wear. Gun was pretty dirty. It came with left handed black leather belt scabbard. I didn't ck the manufacture. Price was firm at $579. I should have taken a picture. After tax I'd be at $629. That seemed a little high for a 4" with honest wear on it……. Am I wrong? Should I have bought it?

I live on LI. A nice example would be priced around 800+tax near me.
I wouldn't mind the honest wear-either I would live with it or polish it away.
Signs of someone messing around with the side plate would be a turn off for me, regardless of the price.
Personally, I'd have to do something about the number on the grip. Most likely, replace the grip.
Given those two condition issues, I think it's priced where it should be.
I would pay more for a better example.

Cam, that's the same thing I was thinking. Polish it up and replace grips or just buy a nicer one. I forgot to mention it also had the stainless rear sight. Not sure when the change to black happened but most people include that in their description. I wasn't looking for a 66 but that $579 jumps out at you at first glance.

When someone electro pencils on a gun and prys off the sideplate, there is too much unnecessary abuse to believe that is all they did to it. I don't like surprises in a gun purchase at a top dollar price.

Buy the thing if it checks out fully functional!
Run, don't walk, and you won't be disappointed. If you don't buy it, send me their number and I will.

I could have snagged a nice 66-1 with Pachs on it a few months ago for 475+tax at my LGS. Thing is, someone had misidentified it as a 64, and priced it low.
The shop has always been good to me,I consider them friends, so I clued them in, and they then priced it at 800 or 850.
I'm no longer interested in centerfire guns, but the notion of flipping did cross my mind, Thing is, the math didn't work.
475+tax, plus a $60 FFL fee when I transfer to the next guy, plus $10 in police fees and two long drives to HQ to put it on and off my license, plus perhaps GB fees...My time is more valuable than that little leftover profit.
Hoping the shop cuts me a little deal on something, but since covid hit, favors no longer happen.
If I was into centerfire, their 66-2 2.5 incher might come home with me at 900.
Personally, I hate selling stuff. Not so much getting rid of something but the dealing with people. I would rather the item say "Buy me", rather than me having to make excuses for issues, as well as the inevitable price reduction, such as the 66 the OP mentioned.

Gun was in reasonable shape for a LEO gun, electro pencil was on the wood target grips because they covered the S/N on the bottom of the frame. The price was more than reasonable. I just paid $1K for a no dash 4" that had minor cosmetic issues that were easily fixed.

That deal was a no brainer if you had the slightest interest in a 4" 66.
If you don't like the SS rear sight you can put a black one on it.
The whole SS rear sight is a collector issue as a plus and minus if you plan to shoot it. I had one and took the SS sight off. Too hard to make out the front sight in the rear SS one.
Had I been in the store, the minute you took a half step away from that gun I would have had it.
Around here that is a $650 gun minimum

The no-dash 66's also had an issue with the cylinder locking up if a bunch of .357's were quickly fired through them. Factory used to have a free fix for it. The SS rear sight is a pain to use in bright sunlight. I would simply replace with an all black rear. More than 1 version of location of front screw; check that out. Do save the all SS rear as collectors like 'em. The SS front will respond to a dab of black paint.

I too would have concerns about a messed up side plate. Bubba may have done who knows what inside.

If looking for a safe queen collector piece those flaws would bother me. It's obviously not of that quality. However it seems very reasonably priced for a fine shooter of that type. I'd probably sand off and refinish the bottom of the stock as that would bother me a bit. I get that the side plate thing bothers a lot of people. If minor it doesn't bother me for a former LEO shooter.

I pried my side plate off on my old duty revolvers a number of times. After shooting a bunch of dirty wax lubed rounds at the range and in a hurry and being hurried by supervisors, I'd take a couple of whacks with the back of the range screwdriver and if it didn't seem like it was ready to come loose I'd give it a little help.

You have to remember, these were everyday use tools, tools that were getting beat up on door jams, office chairs, and too often asphalt or concrete. Used LEO guns that are near pristine were either never issued or were issued to house mice or detectives that stuck them in drawers and carried J frames.

The price seems good to me at current prices for a better than average used LEO gun.

I'm sure it won't be there when you go back. Shouldn't have let that one go. Few and far between at that price! Ya snooze, ya lose.........
