A bill was introduced in the NC House of Representatives today eliminating the current five year renewal for concealed handgun permits and making them permanent.

That would be excellent. The renewal process is a complete mess here in Mecklenburg County. However, I am concerned that eliminating the 5-year renewal will create reciprocity issues. Some states may not recognize NC if no 5-year scrutiny. This is speculation.

Sounds good to me. I hope it comes to pass but I'm not holding my breath.

Would be nice but at 70 I don't think I'll bother.

Yeah, I'm 66 and just renewed mine, so next time it came up I'd be 71 and who knows how many renewals I'd have left anyway.

However, it is a definite step in the right direction, and if whomever introduced the bill ever runs for President, he has my vote.

I've a Louisiana lifetime carry permit. Sometime back they waived the fee for vets over 70 and with an honorable discharge. You do have to requalify every 5 years to keep the permit. So the only fee I paid was to the instructor. Frank

I do have to renew my actual permit (needed for out of state travel and to skip the background check) every 4 years at $35. Drop the form and a check off at the Sheriffs office and come back in 4 or 5 days and pick it up. A life time permit would be good or even say an 8 year one.

For in state carry we have a life time permit in Montana now, it is free, paperless and you get it automatically when you turn 18 and it is good until your convicted of a felony or die.

Here in Virginia, renewals are every 5 years, but at least the fee is now capped at $50 and localities are allowed to charge less if they desire to do so. I think some actually do charge less, but not the county in which I reside, they charge the maximum allowable amount for everything.

OP, pls keep us posted. Wife's daughter wants us to move to her town in NC.

I got my lifetime pistol permit in NYS back in the 60's... Then they decided to restrict us to 5 yr renewals which we have now. This is for all levels of pistol permit: premise ownership, hunting/fishing, or full carry. Restrictions can be changed at the whim of a judge every 5 yrs or sooner.

Thanks OP..... hope it goes thru for you (and maybe for us some day :-).
