I am going to pick up my FS M&P 40 today, providing my lgs is open. I saw my local wallymart has a protec tact light on clearance and also a light/green laser combo. Anybody ever used the protec lights, or should I consider them typical wallyworld junk and pass on it?

Lasers are great for Snap-Cap/Dry-Fire practice, as they let you see how much movement (dipping the muzzle, pulling right/left, etc) one has during trigger press, but I wouldn't rely on a laser for SD.

For low light/no light situations, I want to be able to actually see if what I'm encountering is an intruder, or a midnight muncher (without actually aiming at them), so no rail mounted lights for me. A rail mounted light seems to violate 'Don't point your firearm at anything you're not willing to destroy' rule.

So... if one of those toys is a Hand Held tac-light (and >200 Lumen), that's what I'd go for.

I have used the ProTec light on several firearms, the three I have have been good so far. I have them mounted on a AR, 12ga, and a M&P40. They are the light only version.
They are pretty bright and so far have held up.

While the protec lights will hold up just fine, their non adjustable mounting system means it'll not be a perfect fit for your rail and reach. It would not be secure enough for laser accuracy imo, the light would be fine. Great customer service if needed, I sent a laser/light unit back cause the light died from a broken solder joint in the switch, they sent me a new one, all I paid was shipping to them but never bothered to ask for a shipping label.

At clearance Walmart prices, give them a try. Return policy is there if you need it.

No gun-mounted lights or lasers for me. I don't want to give the bad guy an aiming point.

I guess I see things differently. If a perp see's a red dot on there
body, it tells them to back off or its there a**! a laser MAY prevent you from having to pull the trigger!

I also like a Light and Laser Combo. My Light is more than 600 Luminous with a laser that can be seen with the light on. It works great.
I want to identify the person first and the 600+ Luminous will surprisingly blind them ( the light laser has a switch that can be turned on by a finger press and off by release or you can press the other way and it just stays on) this way you can hit them unknowingly and really shock and blind them with this light. It is extremely bright. Another thing I will add is this light / laser combo is very easy to take off for range sessions and to put back on very quickly. Stays lined up after putting back on to.
I have the Streamlight TLR2 HL I really Like it, it is by my side every night. It is a little costly though.

Streamlight TLR-4 is a nice combo light/laser - I think they might be coming out with a newer version as the current model as been on sale for ~$100 the past few weeks... The smaller size size is a nice fit on a M&P FS or Compact. The laser is not as nice as a CT laser, but it's very usable...
