I'm looking (so far only at a local forum) at a SC 1911 Commander. Any experiences with these pistols? I've read the triggers were a bit sloppy - true? I like the idea of a scandium frame rather than aluminum and the commander size works for me. Thanks.

I purchased a SW1911Pc for carry purposes. I chose the scandium frame because it is light weight and more comfortable to wear on an older skeleton. According to Wilson Combat they expect their frames to last at least 50,000 rounds. I don't believe I'll shoot that many rounds. I have put 1500 rounds through mine in the last year and have had no problems. I keep mine clean and well lubed. And no, I'm not comparing S&W to Wilson Combat. Just saying... I do own and carry a Wilson Combat 45 Compact Light Weight CQB with Officers frame.

I had one of the first SW1911Sc (the billboard one with the image of an atom) models, and it was okay. Snappy, and had some extractor issues that flung casings too close to my head (and, no, the two were not related, i.e. loose grip). But otherwise it was fine. I didn't carry it, so its purpose in my stable soon became hard to justify since it wasn't much fun as a range gun, and I ended up selling it.

I have the older (Billboard) model and it is fabulous in every way possible. Which model is the one you are looking at? Blued Billboard? SS slide? Mine runs everything I put into it and is VERY accurate.

Can you post a photo of the one you are looking at?

The "Scandium" frame is mostly aluminum with a tiny bit of Scandium added in the alloy to improve it.

I have a steel Colt custom shop commander, and no desire to buy the lightweight version, which as at-home-daddy said above, would serve no purpose for me personally.

I've met several "trigger critics" that say any 1911 trigger with some take up is a "sloppy piece of...', so I suggest you try one and judge for yourself. My Colt custom shop trigger is very tight and crisp, but I shoot an old 1991A1 just as well.

Have an older SC and one of the new Bobtail SC commanders, both are very accurate and have been 100% reliable using good mags. Trigger is not match grade, but crisp enough to do good work. It is not an Ed Brown, Nighthawk, or Wilson grade trigger, but certainly good enough for a street gun and probably their equal in accuracy/reliability.

I think the OP was referring to the s&w 1911 triggers exhibiting vertical and excessive side to side play in the frame. Several examples Ive examined at the local range had excessive trigger play in the frame.

Were I looking for a Commander 1911, Id buy the Colt XSE that is for sale in the clasifieds here. Good price on a nice pistol. Regards 18DAI

...or a Dan Wesson Guardian. Just a little bit more for a lot better gun. And the bobtail feels fantastic.

If I can even remember the 80s...:D....IIRC my last 1911 carry gun was a Colt LW Commander....great for carrying vs a all steel gun..... OK for shooting vs an all steel gun.

That said...... I still have the W. German Sig 220 that replaced them all!!!!

:D
