Just thought I'd mention author Dewey Lambdin and his Alan Lewrie naval adventure series, which I stumbled across recently and have been enjoying. Reminds me of the Sharpe and Flashman novels.

The hero, Alan Lewrie, keeps a cat or cats on his ships. A good book to start with would be Hostile Shores (2013) which has a burial at sea for one of his cats.

19 books in the series so far. Well written and entertaining. Not that many hero type characters with cats?

Posted this because of the thread with cat photos.

Makes sense, as it'd keep rats down.

I may check it, but for those who need more info to even look, in which time peiod are these books set, and is Lewrie in the Royal Navy?

May check that out. BTW, did Britain also fight the Barbary pirates, as did the fledging USA? Could make for a good book.

If LVSteve or any other Brit or ex sees this, do you know, about the pirates?

This takes me back many years to reading Forester's Hornblower novels. No cats, but good descriptions of warfare under sail.

I'd like to read some of the Lambdin stuff.

So far, my all-time favorite sea novel is Monsarrat's The Cruel Sea, about Royal Navy corvettes and frigates on North Atlantic convoy escort duty in WWII.
