A forum member read on the 1911 forum of Dave's passing and informed me.
This is a post from there in Dave's own words:
"My father died when I was three. A couple who were friends with my mother often took me shooting starting just before my seventh birthday. He taught me to shoot a single-action with 22 shorts.
My sister was older than me. She had boy friends who were in the Marines or had been in the Marines. Family friends and my sister's boyfriends taught me to shoot revolvers, rifles, and shotguns starting when I was around nine. I went deer hunting when I was nine with a borrowed Winchester '94 30-30.
I joined the Navy Reserves in 1963 when I turned seventeen the summer before my senior year of high school. They introduced me to the 1911. The reserve center had an indoor range.
I qualified with the M-1 Garand in Navy Boot Camp.
I graduated high school on a Friday in 1964 and went on active duty the following Monday. I manned an M2 (Ma Deuce) 50 BMG with an M-14 backup on a Mike Boat in Viet Nam in 1965/1966.
I attended Navy Advisor training at Coronado in 1969/1970. It included attending Marine Advanced Infantry Training at Camp Pendleton, EOD training, Vietnamese Language school, and SERE at Warner Springs.
I carried an M-16 and a 1911 for a year as an advisor on Swift Boats in Viet Nam in 1970/1971. I carried an M-16 and a 1911 in Viet Nam in 1972/1973.
I was an instructor at Coronado from 1973 to 1976.
I got out of the Navy after twelve years of active duty, went to work for a law enforcement agency, and joined the Army National Guard. I qualified expert marksman with the M-16 and 1911 once a year for ten years until I retired."
Journey well, brother.
