Need Advice From Members With Breathing Problems.

I was prescribed prednisone as a first step in addressing my bad kidney function. I was not only really cranky, but it stress tested my pancreas which failed spectacularly. I ended up in the hospital with really staggering BG figures and a heck of an A1C. Run away quickly.

You guys are THE BEST! Thank you all for such great information! I knew I was posting to the right forum!

I will take heed of a lot of your suggestions and I truly appreciate it. Like I stated, the V.A. would not prescribe prednisone as they said it’s addictive like I stated above and you folks have too.

I am in good physical shape except for my breathing problems and just want to live life to where I can walk several or more yards and more without this damn breathing problem! Through all of this, the prednisone has been my saving grace and maybe it HASN’T!

You guys are the best and I will ask for a pulmonologist which I’ve never heard of.

Stay tuned for further updates and thanks to all!

You do not want to take prednisone long term...

It is a VERY rough drug on your entire system even in the short term. Find a pulmonologist or someone that can recommend some inhaler, breathing treatments with a nebulizer and many other treatments without taking such a ghastly drug. I had a bronchial inflammation recently and my primary doctor prescribed a short term course. When I saw my ENT he told me to stop taking it and was rather upset that my primary doctor wasn't versed in breathing problems and put me on it. I did inhalers instead. The bottom line is that topical steroids help but systemic steroids are REALLY bad for you, even in the short term. I even found out that I could stop taking the inhalers when I figured that my problem was heavy dust due to our present living conditions (a story nobody here wants me to relate) and found that the best thing was a lot of water and Mucinex to get rid of the STIFF phlegm that was in my bronchial tubes. As suggested above, you need to see a pulmonologist.

Gebe, were you a smoker? Did you have an occupation that caused this?

If the answer is no to those 2 questions, I wonder if you inhaled some bad chemicals in Nam. <I know that’s an improbable long shot, but you fine young men were subject to a lot of toxins that no one knew anything about yet.

Best of luck, my friend.

Agree with the posts on prednisone. Just got off a week of a step down bout after a surgery. It wreaked havoc with my physical and mental state.
Don’t mess with that stuff for longer than a doctor prescribes.

Thanks again guys for your experiences!

Thanks old bear, I will!

Yendor357, yes I was a smoker. I also worked in a environment where there was lots of asbestos dust back in the 1970’s and the doctors told me all of that had no consequence of my condition concerning the asbestos. I couldn’t believe that but that’s what they told me.

Again, thanks to all who contributed to this thread but I have to say that the prednisone, good or bad, has been a good thing for me. It’s not the do it all for everything but has helped me with breathing at times and has given me energy at times but I agree, it’s not a solution for all folks suffering with these conditions.

Thanks again for all of your input!
