The story, so far,is scant other than the cat jumped him from behind and he fought it off and killed it,then drove himself to the hospital.Ive heard of people fending them off when they come from the front, but not from behind.Amazing!

<<<Story>>>

They say in this article that the runner didn't have any weapon, but doesn't say how he managed to kill the critter either. And they say he heard a nose behind him and turned around right before the cat attacked, so that might be why he survived.

Interesting! Maybe the weapon was a large stick? Cannot imagine being within an arms length of a struggling or fighting mountain lion long enough to strangle it. Think you would be shredded to tatters in no time at all.

bashing it's head against a rock would be quicker. Obviously a full grown mountain lion would make mincemeat out of a surprised hiker, but an adolescent . . .

Generally cats kill by breaking the neck of prey, or strangling at the neck. Slicing someone's belly open will kill them, but it can take awhile to die from a shredded belly.

My grandfather told me of a woman that killed a Panther(Louisiana), sometime in the early 1900's, by "choking it down" with her apron strings. She was at a creek washing clothes, and was jumped from behind. He told me she carried some ugly scars on her back till she died years later! Some people will simply fight for life more than others....she apparently had a lot of fight in her! memtb

Mountain Lion attacks runner in Colorado

Lion attacks runner near Ft Collins:

Colorado Runner Fights Off And Kills Mountain Lion | Time

Similar to an attack in early 1990's outside Idaho Springs Colorado described in detail in the book 'The Beast In The Garden', but the runner survived in this most recent attack.

These attacks occur more frequently than one might think: about once a year here.

So what's your plan to defend yourself in a similar situation?
