List of handguns legal/ illegal in California

San Diego is a great, great place. Despite the oppressive gun laws in CA, San Diego certainly has a much nicer, and way more eclectic lifestyle than you'll find in Texas. That's not intended to be an insult to Texas, but Southern California simply has a much more diverse population than almost anywhere else in the country.

As for the gun laws, as posted above, you need to spend some time at Calguns. They'll help set you straight.

As has been stated, above, the roster doesn't make a gun legal or illegal. It just controls what new guns can or can't be sold in CA. Bringing off-roster guns into CA, is perfectly legal. Selling them here, is perfectly legal. Buying them here, is perfectly legal, but in those cases, must be done person-to-person. Or, through consignment.

The "roster" is yet another underhanded tactic by the left. In essence, they are prohibiting us from buying certain guns, but they don't have to say they are "banning" anything. They can hide behind the lie that they are legislating for our safety. The dirty snakes.

And in the process... they have also succeeded in turning fellow gun enthusiasts and out of state FFL's against us.

The California firearms shipping rules put into place a few years ago that requires 01 (dealer) FFL's to obtain a DOJ verification approval number in order to ship a firearm here has led to brick walls being put up.

Many a FFL dealer and private parties are doing the dirty work for the anti-gun factions here by putting the blanket disclaimer in auctions and classified posts "No California sales" rather than provide some solidarity with the "gun people" here and refuse to roll over and play dead for the people trying to take away our rights.

Some people are all in for no infringement on their 2nd Amendment rights, but also all too willing to throw us Californian's under the bus... and that my fellow gun owners sucks.

The Calguns Foundation Wiki webpage by far has the best and current information: Calguns Foundation Wiki

In addition to C&R's there is also another exemption to the handgun roster, Olympic Pistols. The S&W M41 & M52 (no-dash, -1 & -2's) are on that list.

I agree in part. One of the California FFLs I called to make the gift to my daughter started yelling at me "I'm not going to risk my license by breaking the law for you!" Hey, I got the info off of your DOJ website.

OTOH my FFL here in Virginia had to fill out extra paperwork and register with the California DOJ just to mail the gun to a California FFL. He's a stand up guy and did the extra work for me, but when I put something up for auction I'm going to put "No California sales" in it. I don't have the time or expertise to make sure I'm not violating California laws somehow. I deeply regret that but can't afford the potential legal problems. Plus, am I supposed to put a California surcharge in for the hassle of my FFL being forced to register with the CA DOJ every time we transferred something there?

You as a private person do not need to register with the DOJ to sell a gun to a CA resident, nor do you need an FFL. All that's required is for you to ship a gun to a CA FFL with a copy of your driver's license. If its not on the roster its on the buyer not the seller and it will most likely sit in limbo as he wont be allowed to receive/register it unless they use an exemption.
