Does anyone know anything about the Allstar/Magnus bullets to reload? Trying to find the right powder to use to reload and how much.

I looked at their web site. Looks like you are talking about their 180gr FPBB hardcast bullet? If so IMO it would be ok to start at the lowest recommend load for 175gr alloy #2 in the Lyman #49. What powders do you have? finding just any powder in these times is crazy. We all have favorite loads with favorite powders, but most likely buying the recommended powder would be difficult? Lyman lists what I call the standards: BE, 231, Unique, aa#5, 800x, universal, and power pistol. I can provide the data if you tell me what powders you have on hand or can fine to buy.

with 800x I would start at 5.6gr which should get you approx. 850fps with a 4' barrel and progress to 5.9 which should be approx. 900fps. I would guess 5.8 or 5.9 to be the most accurate based on my experience with 180gr copper washed bullets but these loads should not show any signs of over pressure.

Hodgdon and the other powder mfg. and some of the bullet mfg. have web sites with reloading information.

I have several reloading manuals. Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook or Lyman Reloading Book are my favorites reloading manuals. But Hornady & Speer are good also.

rant on,
I have a friend that has been reloading for a few years now. He will buy powder or bullets , etc. to put on the shelf just in case the SHTF. But hasn't forked out the money for a good reloading manual. At about $25 these books are a bargain and full of good information.

I trust the information in these books more than information from some nimrod on the internet that may or may not know what he is talking about.
rant off..

Sorry I'm not pointing a finger at, or questioning anybodies information . You can and do get a lot of good information on this and other web sites. But I don't trust any of it until I check it out. How much of it could be personal opinion ,, typo error,, etc.. ?? oF couRse I nEver fAt finger anything.

800x, not my first choice, but it's all you have so? The Hodgdon site shows starting load of 5.6gr for a 200gr JHP. So 5.6gr for for a 180gr LTC is a safe start, work up in 1/10gr increments. 800X is a pretty slow powder, meant for max effort loads, so not a good plinking powder IMO. Always keep in mind when you can't find exact data for your comob, heavy bullet data is always safe to use with lighter bullets. Jacketed do NOT load the same as lead.
OAL, always gun & bullet specific. Start @ the max OAL that fits your gun. Make a dummy round & try it in the removed bbl & then all the way down in the mag. Start @ 1.140" & work it down.

Here is an interesting read.
Why the 180gr Bullet is a Bad Choice for .40 S&W

If you look at the Hornady and Lee manuals, they give a bit more room than Lymans in one of their loads. The one load in Lymans is very close to the max so be gentle in the powder if you go this route.

I do not know where the tables came from. I have no way of knowing if the pressures illustrated are accurate. But if they are correct...

Does any one know if this has been proven to be true or is this old data that is no longer supported?
