Yesterday I took our younger golden retriever, Capella, to the dog park. She's 2 1/2 years old, on the small side, and still very much a puppy.
The dog park it's about 1 1/2 acres surrounded by a chain-link fence. The ground has a thick covering of wood chips and bark mulch. There are several mature oaks that provide shade. It's a nice facility maintained by volunteers and donations.
It was mid afternoon and we had the place to our selves for a short period.
A young couple showed up with a baby in a stroller and a female Bernese Mountain dog. They were new to the area, never been to the dog park before. Their dog was about 70 pounds and the same age as mine, a nice dog. Capella naturally wanted to engage the other dog in play but she was intent on checking the park out.
Capella came back over to me where I was chatting with the couple. Funny thing was I had just asked them how the dog got along with their little baby girl. They responded that the dog adored her. During this conversation I noticed their dog was coming toward us. Capella noticed the baby in the stroller and went over toward it. The Mountain dog quickly got between the stroller and Capella and gave her a little bit of a growl. Capella understood the message and came over to my side. The dog is a class act.
I was quite impressed and the couple was very pleased with their dog's protective behavior.
Shortly there after the two dogs were you yucking it up and having a good time playing.

I quit going to the most popular one in my end of town a while back, maybe 4 years, my Weim loved it but there always seemed to be one dog that had to confront her. She's older with bad hips now, but for years she was 96 lbs. of pure muscle. Last time was some blue-eyed mixed breed and I told it's owner please take the dog away, and I took mine away. Something was up, as Daisy's hair was up. That dog kept coming over so I left. The Weimaraner is a very nice dog, but also pretty smart, and I didn't need someone suing me because he wouldn't keep his dog away. But, you're right. Dogs have a sense, like that dog was protecting the baby. Good dog! Mine protected my wife and daughters.

What is this "Dog Park" you speak of??

Couple of neighbors by me think their dogs are free to roam the neighborhood. I'm not talking about neighbors who walk their dog on a leash. I'm talking about the ones who let their dog out while they're washing the car or mowing the lawn.

I had two small dogs wander onto my property so I shooed them off. Their owners (three doors away) smiled as if to say "Aren't they cute?". Neither dog had so much as a collar let alone a license and I made it a point to let the owners know the law. No leash...No license...That's a oneway trip with Animal Control if caught. Haven't seen the dogs outside since that day. Don't get me wrong. I love animals. I just don't like irresponsible owners.

My apologies to the OP for straying from the original content.
