Of course, you can be in the city limits here and still be in the country. The owners of the miniature Shetland Pony reported that at least six dogs were involved in the attack. The dogs jumped a cattle fence and mauled the pony to the extent that it had to be euthanized. The owners are scheduled to be on the agenda at the next city council meeting. The paper reported that the owners stated that it could be a child next time.

Free roaming feral dogs are a problem, and the problem will probably worsen. I realize that everyone blames everything on the economy, but I believe there is an element of truth. Yesterday I saw four half-grown dogs, what appeared to be some kind of black lab mix, beside a country road. It is easy to spot dogs that have been abandoned on the roadside. They appear confused, and will walk around aimlessly. I have seen them hang around for several days in the same spot they were abandoned. These dogs had that look. Undoubtably, the owners grew tired of buying feed for them. They surely thought they could put the dogs out and someone who lives nearby will be glad to get them. In reality, the humane thing to do would be to put a bullet in their (the dogs) head.

Dogs like these will wind up ran over by cars, or on the edge of starvation, and will eventually go feral and attack livestock, small game, and in some cases, humans. I have shot or shot at dogs in my pasture. One of my neighbors shot four or five grown dogs that were attacking a cow that was calving. He said that two of the dogs had collars. That indcates to me that Fido who sleeps in the yard all day, if allowed to roam free, is likely to join a pack on occasion.

I have had to put down unwanted puppies. It isn't any fun, and I surely get no enjoyment from it, but it is much more humane than taking them to the dumpster.

I've put down two dogs in my time, both were on my property and threatening my dog/kids/myself. It upset me to do so. If their owners had cared for them enough to keep them at home, they'd still be around. It's never easy to clean up a mess that someone else has made, especially when it's not the mess's fault. Groups like PETA have some funny ideas about what is "humane". They need to remember that the root of that word is "human", as in humans come first. Part of being humane is ensuring that your dog is safely contained in your yard.

I've got a pack of four big dogs showing up on my game cameras. Come deer season, they're toast.

I've never seen a Dog Stamp on a dear licence.;)

If you want to have a successful dear season git rid of the pooches now.....Stamp or no Stamp.

Why wait for deer season? You need target practice now.

It's always VARMIT season! May seem heartless to some, but a loved & kept pet is not just turned out to roam with a pack.

DO NOT forget that dogs by nature are pack animals & when left on their own, will revert to their natural instincts.

Why wait to right a wrong 'till it is an emergency, or worse!

Why it's a good idea to carry. And for feral dogs a .22 pistol or revolver will work just fine (for personal protection).

I’ve experienced them at my place from time to time but haven’t seen any signs of packs lately. I was sitting in a dear stand a couple of years ago when a buck run into the clearing chased by five dogs. I unloaded on the dogs.

America's problem with feral man eating hogs had its roots in the Dust Bowl and Great Depression era. Folks would turn their pigs loose into the wild rather than having the bank get them for auction.

Anyway, in some states the game law would seem to allow for shooting any dogs that are chasing or menacing the game.

Feral dogs were a problem in Michigan even when I was a child. I remember that a homeless guy was found dead in Flint around 1987, and the only question was whether he was dead before the dogs starting eating him or whether they killed him.

By the mid 90s many people had taken to carrying a pistol when out fishing in certain areas of Michigan because of the dog problem.

I left in 2006. I don't know how it is now. The rebounding coyote population might have eaten some of them. Other people - outside the cities - took to simply shooting them on sight.

The most fun I've had is shooting coyotes and similar sized varmints. ;)

Coons and other similarly cat-sized varmints should be trapped and taken to the locals that specialize in such...cuisine.

If time and schedule allowed, I'd be out there a lot more often. From the camera's data, there is no set schedule - they pass through at various times, sometimes only once a week. As for the dog stamp, I'm still waiting for a illegal alien stamp to be issued. Dogs or no dogs, this will be a terrible hunting season. What didn't burn in the spring wildfires, the drought as finished off. All the watering holes are totally dry, the closest water is about two miles away, if it hasn't dried up by now. Very serious condition.

Illegal alien stamp,We can only dream.:D:D:D:D:D

I wish I could send you guys some of the rain we've been getting.Maybe this next storm will miss us and head your way.We don't need it.

You Southern folks need to talk to your Wildlife people about Wolf introductions. We have very few feral dog packs in rural Montana.

I won't tolerate aggressive dogs wandering the property, especially since my 8 year old granddaughter began staying with us, and living only a couple of miles from town, we see plenty of loose dogs. Most are friendly mutts just passing through, but a few that chose to show teeth and growl, rapidly developed lead poisoning.
