Has anyone heard tale of this? Below is the article and the reference is included by Massad Ayoob. I don't believe I read that article, though I do read that magazine. The link is included at the bottom as well.

Internal locking mechanism

Partial Lock Failure The hammer rebounded from the recoil of a magnum load and the internal lock pin impinged enough to freeze it in place
All Smith & Wesson revolvers have been equipped with an internal locking mechanism since the acquisition by Saf-T-Hammer. The mechanism is relatively unobtrusive, is activated with a special key, and renders the firearm inoperable. While the lock can simply be left disengaged, some gun enthusiasts refuse to buy "post-lock" guns, fearing the lock might cause the gun to malfunction when needed most, as in a crisis. If the lock breaks, the gun will not work without being repaired.[12] Smith & Wesson has repeatedly stated that the locking mechanism does not affect reliability, although several cases have been documented.[13][14]
Smith & Wesson announced in March, 2009, that it would begin phasing the internal lock out of its revolver lineup.[15]

And if my Aunt had balls she'd be my uncle.
I will believe it when I see it. If will also F- up my entire collection strategy.

Oh, sorry. I went and dug up the Ayoob article. It doesn't apply to revolvers (yet).

Yeah, I just purchased a new-to-me 686-4, so I was kind of excited and mad at the same time. I'm a little relieved! It will save me some money. At least in the short term. I bet they'll offer them at least with and without the lock within the next year or two.

Sorry again for the excitement/letdown/relief!

OUTA MY ROAD!!!
I'm first in line for a model 22 without the lock!
I get to buy a NEW S&W again!!!

Hot damn. I'll have to write. They probably have enough of my letters in the trash. Maybe I can give them one of congratulations and follow it up with a purchase once they follow through on their promise.

I currently have (7) S&W revolvers....none have that pesky lock.

If any of this pans out, maybe the price will come down on the pre-locks. You can bet they are going to ratchet the price up on the "post-locks"

If they get rid of the IL, but bring it back in five or so years, will they be called "post-pre-post locks"?

No, by then it will be illegal to own a gun.

Nope.

S&W revolvers with locks will become the push-feed Model 70 of the revolver world: adequate for any shooting task where your life is NOT on the line.

I hope it is true. It will boost their new sales and probably also reduce the hot demand for the pre-lock guns. Both great developments for everyone.
