Yes, only Jay Silverheels will ever be Tonto for me.
I'm not too thilled with the idea of Johnny Depp playing any role, let alone this one. Who's playing the Lone Ranger, Ryan Seecrest? Mario Lopez?
With out me looking it up, How much makeup did he have on this time?![]()
Being of Native descent, when I first heard of Johnny Depp playing the Iconic Indian role of Tonto my first reaction was "what the ....," then I read about it in "Native" magazine and it turns out that Depp is part American Indian and his potrayal of Tonto is looked on favorably by the Native communty.
The original Tonto played by Jay Silverheels was with the halting speach pattern and the "ugh, Kemosabe," and was considered as somewhat stereotypical and insulting by the Native community. However, Jay Silverheels played the part with pride, grace and intelligence.
The Depp portrayal is also with pride and intelligence and the Lone Ranger is more of an equal partner rather than the leader and Tonto as the follower.
The bird on the head thing? I'm not so sure about that. Apparently when he was researching for the role he came across a picture of an Indian with a bird in the background and decided that'd make a cool hat.
Its gotta be better than the last attempt, with the forgettable Klinton Spilsbury.
