Am I (almost) done for now with the third generation Smiths? Heresy?
Both my nieces have married well, but one of my nephews by marriage is a favorite. He grew up in a hunting family and has believes strongly in the Second Amendment and the freedoms and responsibilities it presents. Since my own son and daughter couldn't care less about guns, hunting, and the great outdoors, this particular young man is probably getting whatever guns I don't take with me. In fact, he has taken a particular shine to my S&W 908. I tried to steer him towards its stablemate, the 469, but he ain't steerin'. Darn him!
To make a long story short, the deal's not yet consummated but I've already begun to plan the "value line" gun's replacement. On the big gun auction site I missed out by a day or two on a couple of Buy Now 908s, one in somewhat battered condition and one much nicer, both fairly priced. Moral of the story: you snooze, etc.
OK, if I lose the 908, what do I want? And waiting for a deal to come along isn't an option. The gun has to be readily available. Right now, I really can't go much past $350 before shipping and transfer. I'm looking for a shooter. It has to be a 9mm semi-auto with a hammer with a metal frame. SA, TDA, DAO isn't important. It doesn't have to be easy to conceal; I've got a couple other options for carry. Rugers and High Points need not apply. (Yes, I'm a bigot about this.) On-line purchase is OK, but I have a thing about auctions – don't like 'em none at all. For me, it's "Buy Now "or skate.
A company, Simpson's, LTD in Illinois has 915s and 910s in varying shades of condition from $295 (M915, 75%, no mag) to ($350, M915, 75%, mag or M910, 90%). They look like police trade-ins, although the ads don't say that. The 915 is a nicer gun; the 910 is the service equivalent to the 908. I know they're good shooters. There may be some out there who don't like the 915/910s; I don't expect to hear from many on this particular forum.
Robertson's Trading Post in Tennessee has Beretta 92Ss in various shades starting at $319. These are made in Italy and saw government service. They have the European-style heel button mag release which isn't a deal killer for me. It's a larger gun that either of the S&Ws. The ones I've shot were good guns and I've got a very good friend, ex-fed cop, who was issued the American version and loved it. Some of the military I know think highly of their M9s. Some dislike them; that may be a calibre issue, not the guns themselves.
The 5906? Too heavy. The 5903? Harder to find at my price. The second gen 459/659 have the same objections for me.
So, for about the same prices, I can get either a 3rd Gen service pistol or a Beretta. Beretta parts are probably more available and mags will be cheaper, even for the lower mag release button. However, gettig the Beretta wil mean that for the first time in a long time, I'm without a third gen S&W Will withdrawal be rough, daddy?

Opinions? Other options I missed? Derision?
Thanks in advance.

The Beretta 92 is a great pistol. But from your choices, I would go with a 915. A great "do everything well" 9mm. Slightly smaller than a 92 as well. And every bit as accurate and reliable.

Wayne Novak thought enough of the 915 to offer a "Full House" custom 915. It had a match grade barrel, Novak Low Mount sights, trigger job and refinish in a more durable matte black.

Unable to locate one, after several years of searching, I went with a similar 915 worked over by the Performance Center for the head of the S&W Academy. It is a fine nine.

The 910 is no slouch either. Yes, it has more plastic parts, a cheesier finish and no locking lug on the barrel. But mine was accurate enough that I used it to teach noobs for several years. Enough that I amassed over 19K rounds on it before finally cracking the frame. And in all those rounds I only recall two malfunctions. Both due to the frame being cracked - on the last day it was fired.

I have owned a few 92FS pistols and have no complaints.........well......other than they are a little big......for what they are. But they hold their value pretty well and if you want, Wilson Combat will customize on for you.

Good luck with your decision! Hope this helps. Regards 18DAI

Verbosity!!!

Heaven forfend!!

You'll find no overt examples of loquacious pedantry on this venue! :D

Seriously, given the choices you offered (M915, M910, M92S), I gotta lean toward the Smiths.
Not just cause we're all fans here, but for the practical reason of commonality of controls and operation.

Also, the Smiths share a commonality of parts.
The magazines for the 910/915 will work in your 469 and the top ends should interchange (between the 915 and 469) should you become so adventurous. ;)

I also lean towards the $295 M915 because magazines can be found for less than the $55 difference quoted for the same model with a magazine.

I agree with 18 that the 915 is a little better pistol than the 910 and I think it is also the more aesthetically pleasing.
However, that is subjective.

Your call.

John

You may want to rethink your aversion to an auction because there is a really clean 3913 offered that currently is about $350 and ends Monday am....Personally I've never seen a 3913 with the non Novak sites or maybe just didn't notice ...But....this one might have an early 6906 upper ....but I've been wrong before:D

Barbara em.

Have you looked at Aim Surplus, they current have 6906, 4013TSW and 5903 in stock, with the 6906 and 5903 at $349.95 and the 4013 for $10 more.

That gun ended up going for $428.79, but I'm really confused about that slide. First, it has the wrong sights for a Model 3913... and second, the slide doesn't seem to fit right on the 3913 frame. Is that indicative of a 6906 slide on a 3913 frame? Or is that possibly a 669 slide, albeit with the correct right side safety lever installed? The front sight isn't correct for either, so I'm guessing replacement sights all around. But that slide-to-frame fit confuses me. Anybody able to help me out on that?

I don't think I've ever seen a slide/frame fit that far off.
Could be that it just wasn't reassembled all the way... ... but the pix didn't seem to concern the bidders! ;)

I have an early 6906 upper like that and it fits the same way on my 3913 frame - the rear of the slide has a somewhat shorter, rounded contour. Looks strange but seems to function fine.

With the choices you mentioned ...... I'd go with 18DAI and the best 915 you can get. I've got one as my 'rough duty" gun (bit banged up when I got it but cerecoted the frame for a two tone look) ........ and two others anib in the safe..... just in case. None cost me more than $325.

I've been a big fan of the Beretta 92 since my first F Compact in 1988 and have many variants from single stack Type-Ms to EliteIIs and even a Wilson Combat Centurion.

To me for an every day gun... the Centurion (what the M9 should have been)...... or the 229 size Compact are the best of the Breed ...........

The short barreled/slide (4 1/4") 92FS Compact teamed up with with Mec-gar's new 15rd magazine, radius'ed backstrap and ultra-thin G-10 grips...... has come a long way since the M9 of 1985.

Because a great friend helped me find a nicer example (thanks again), the other day I listed a 915 locally. It was in excellent mechanical condition but had a shameful application of model car enamel to some damage on the frame. I listed it for $300 and had it sold two minutes later. Apparently that was more than a fair price. :(

Meanwhile, if you decide on another 908, I might know someone with an extra. :D

Thank you for all the input. Much appreciated.

It turns out it was much ado about nothing. I went to my ex's (he's good for something, if nothing else than having a very good gun safe and he doesn't begrudge me a shelf) and let my nephew-in-law peruse my small collection. He picked up a battered pistol with more patina than blue and said he'd never seen this one before.
Well it's a Colt 1908 that family legend says was carried by my Uncle Albert while he was working the Galveston wharves as a detective during WWII. (There's nobody left alive of his generation to confirm or deny the story; Uncle A wasn't always trustworthy in his tales.) Two correct two-toned magazines. Would I consider selling it for $200? The offer is only a to salve his conscience; he wants nothing for free.
Does he really want to carry a .380? He's read on Lucky Gunner Lounge that civilians need quickness and accuracy more than power and if the old Colt qualifies, he'll certainly carry it. Two days at the range and the 1908 (vintage 1937 according to Sam Lisker's page) has a new owner and I quietly put the two C-notes in their children's college funds.
So, my 908S is still riding with me, along with my 469. If I decide to add a full sized gun, it will probably be a 915 or, failing that, a 910.

I love the smith products but the 92FS is a heck of a pistol. Having owned one I found extremely comfortable to shoot. Very accurite also. I may buy another one again even.

After a few years away, I'm back in the 3rd generation club and mighty happy. Glad you were able to keep the 908, although I'd hate to lose a 1908 Colt Hammerless.
You're uncle sounds like my Uncle Leon, who was (according to legend) a bootlegger in Texas during Prohibition.

Tom 1951 Welcome to the Forum. Your uncle sounds like my Grand Dad who was the Mayor and Magistrate in our town plus the Biggest Bootlegger during the 2nd war. Good guys.
