Look like a cracked slide to you?

Probably too late if you're sending it in, but take it too a machine and have them magnaflux it. The put a ferous powder on it and apply a strong magnet, while tapping the slide lightly with a small hammer. If it is cracked, the powder aligns in the crack.

Just stop drill it and call it good.

Works on airplanes, it should work on the slide.

Save some money shipping, ask S&W to send you a shipper.

They did. FedEx Prepaid.

almost 100% of the time they ask for the entire gun sent back

I'm fine with that. I'd rather ship the entire thing, plus then you have to inform FedEx that there is a firearm in the box and that helps because they DON'T want to lose a firearm in shipping. Not Good.

LOL. No offense, but why would I go to that trouble? I'll just let S&W deal with it.

Very good point!!!

OK folks. Got it back today via FedEx all is well.

They replaced the slide. Funny thing is they never told me if it was cracked or not. In the box there was a paper that said "Melonite stain" in red pen. I wonder if that is the coating on the slide (kind of like Glock's Tenifer coating)? If so I wonder if it wasn't a crack and just a messed up part of the coating?

Total turnaround time was very good in my opinion. I shipped it on 9/28/16 and I got it back on 10/26/16. Under 30 days.

Anyway....now off to shoot it. :)

Glad to hear. It's seems strange that there would be a flaw in the finish, but anything is possible. Glad they fixed it, I'm gonna go look over my Shield and see if there's anything haha

Melonite

Joining the thread a month late and a few dollars short...but seeing the photos I was going to suggest it was a cosmetic flaw in the Melonite treatment. If you look at the way the line wandered through all those fishscale serrations, that alone suggested it was not a crack. The serrations would probably have the effect of interrupting the propagation of a surface crack. At any rate, glad to hear you're back up & running OP, and that S&W took care of you. Their CS is truly world-class.

I personally think that rather than tell a customer that they have a cracked slide that they just said it had to do with melonite.

I will be selling this Shield and buying a Glock 43 now. I've owned 3 Glocks and never had to send them in for anything. I've owned one S&W and I had to send it in within months of it being new.

NOT Selling it. See my reply below...

OP: So in summary, you get a bunch of opinions on this board; send the gun in to S&W; they send it back with a brand new slide and indicate it was a problem with the melonite (you didn’t know what melonite was in post #28); you say you’re happy with the service and turnaround time; then you accuse S&W of lying and decide to jump ship? I’d never want to be in a foxhole with you, man. Go have fun with your Glocks.

Sorry about that...

Sorry guys. Had a really bad couple days. I'm not selling it. It was more of a knee-jerk reaction. I'm going to keep it and shoot it. If I have something that works, I use it. I just want it to be reliable. Didn't mean to cause any trouble. Just had a bad day. Thanks guys!

Make sure to drill a matching hole on the other side. You wouldn't want it to look half *****.
