Looking at another Model 48

I am checking on what would be a second "48" for me and I was wondering what approximate vintage this gun would be:


It's a 8K777XX and is said to be sporting an 8 3/8" barrel.

I appreciate the suggests by all about buying the "book" but I am by no means a heavy collector.

Hmmmm ..... no ........... LOL!!


Seeing that Three 44s beats a pair of 48's ........ I think I'll hang onto the current handle!!

The truth is that I don't have three 44s right now ......... I do have two .41 mags, two .44 mags and a .480 Ruger ..........in a Ruger SRH ....... (traded one .44 for the .480 .......... )

While I don't know about the box and I have not seen the revolver yet, a good friend says it's in good shape. While it's listed as a 8 3/8" my friend thought it might be a six inch. I know ..... you'd think he was "raised better" .......... LOL!!

They are asking $300 .........

For 3 bills unless its a total beater, thats a good deal 6 or 8 3/8. The long tube 48 is a fun gun to shoot, utilizes the .22WMR a little better and balances better than you would think. For that price you better hurry.

Tell me about it.

Four years ago, I reluctantly dished out $450 for my six inch with box. It's about 99.25%.

And it's gone up from there!

I look at my first and can't bear to use it!!!

As far as it's capabilities in the field. Between peting jobs I did manage to drill a ground squirrel at 60 yds with it as well as closer shots.

I find without a doubt that the .22 mag is the most under rated round out there for smaller game. Folks get hung up on the round's cost and see it as "just another .22" and that's "all she wrote".

What would really suit my needs as a rancher/farmer would an economically priced 648 in .22 mag.

(If I am gonna dream, I might as well dream BIG!!!)

I'll let you know how this whole business shakes out ........

In fact, you'd drool some more.

I brought home the 48-3 for the agreed price of $300 night before last. I am no collector but it's likely a 90% and it's an 8 3/8".

The fellow poster that said it would be a good balance is right .... it feels good.

I am going to stay tuned with this family as a friend and I are dealing on the entire load room ........ we might need to borrow a heavy truck?

And some more news:

I handled a bunch of Smith's and others. There in that bunch of heaven were a SET of Weblys ........ they are for sale!

Also, one of my life long hoped fors: Handle a HD Outdoorsman ......... (not for sale) ........ I thanked the family for not selling that one as I'd have to shed tears for not having enough money to go around !!! ........ and having to see it move!!

And lastly, I could not stand to only snag ONE good Smith & Wesson so I also have secured an 8 3/8" K14 for $250 ...... it's not as well preserved as the model 48 but it is by no means a beater.

I read an article on them thiry years ago and vowed right then and there that someday .... someway ........ I'd have one of puppies!! Night before last my ship came in!!

Also, on a different note I snagged an 870 in 20 gauge. It is not mechanically abused but the finnish is about finnished. Not an impediement to me for $200 when it's a Wingmaster!

No, just Obama bucks!

I wish the family would have taken the slow route on selling this collection because their and my mutual friend and I would have been glad to help them get these weapons up on forums like this one and get them their just desserts ........ but the widow wants the guns out of the house! Her late husband was a true salt of the earth and took his spare mad money and invested it in "precious" metals .... guns, brass, powder, primers, bullets and loading gear.

Another of their Smiths sold before I got there. They were asking $245 for a Model 28 (4") that was in good shape. I told my friend to BUY that gun .... he hemmed around and let another of his friends that buys 28's get away with it for $220!

As for the guns I bought, the Smiths are no brainers ..... obviously. The 870 20ga. is about par for it's condition. But that suits me just fine. I am a rancher and I need work guns more than safe queens. I'll keep that short on blueing Remy treated with CorrosionX and blast gray diggers and starlings by the score ...... (and have a ball doing it!)
