Hey everyone,

New member here. I will be getting my first handgun soon, and I've got it narrowed down to the M&P 9mm and the Gen3 Glock 19. Right now, I'm really leaning towards the M&P. I really like the feel, the sights, the looks, the availability of a thumb trigger, etc. The only thing that is holding me back is I've read a lot of stuff online saying that the M&P is not nearly as reliable as the Glock. As much as I like the M&P, the thing that draws me to the Glock is that it's got a rock solid reputation for reliability.

I realize that you have to take what you read online with a grain of salt, and there are lots of reviews that say the M&P is extremely well made. I was just hoping that people who have the M&P could weigh in with their thoughts.

I have owned Glock pistols since they were first introduced here, and carry a model 17 every day for work, and carried a model 19 off duty a great deal. I studied, looked at, handled, and fired several M&P's before I purchased an M&P9c, and now I carry it regularly, I have put more than twenty five hundred rounds through it since I bought it this summer, and I have had zero issues with it, in fact I love it, the ergonomics are fantastic. I also read alot of negative press about the M&P models when they were introduced, it seems the bugs have all been worked out, at least to me, I am willing to bet my life on it every time I carry it.....in addition to that, it is made right here in the U.S.A.

My wife has an M&P9mm and loves it, my son owns the M&P40 and he loves it. You find that with guns it is all personal preference and how it feels and shoots. The M&P is just as reliable as the glock. Now some people will see that the M&P trigger is not the best and has to be reworked and I know people that swear by that.

Now for me I don't like glocks or the M&P but all I shoot and carry are the 3rd Gen S&W, good luck with your choice

Sounds to me like your already sold on the M&P. That said there's all kinds of stuff out there on the net, and as you wisely surmised a decent amount of salt is needed!
I've had both and currently own an old gen2 19. It's just a tool for me and it shows it. The M&P9 has it beat hands down on ergonomics, and doesn't bite the hand that feeds it. Yes there have accuracy issues with the full size M&P9, and the Gen4 Glock's have been less than sterling. That said if I were to buy a new poly 9mm I'd be looking really hard at the M&P!
My advice, find a range that rents them and try them both, then decide.

I was issued a G21 in 1993....switched to 3rd Gen SW in 98 to 2008.

Allowed to carry 1911 config in 2008 to present.

Been around Glocks as the armorer and a firearms instructor. Got picked up by the academy as the FI in 2010. They have G19.

This year I bought a MP9 and recently did a comparison between a 3rd Gen lower/2nd Gen upper G17 and the MP9. Only the ergonomics won for the MP....my ratty looking G17 won as far as shootability. Even the cadets....18 of them said they could not feel the trigger reset. Many preferred the Glock and some preferred a XDm9 that belonged to a cadet.....with only 2 cadets liking the MP.

I have huge hands and cannot feel trigger reset on the MP. I recently purchased an apex ram to see if it improves trigger reset. I will mess with that gun soon.

I recently assigned myself a G19 and will carry that either as back up to my 1911ssssss or as primary when I don't feel like packing a lot of mags.

Somewhat unfair test between Glock and MP as I have a lot of time behind a glock trigger. I don't want to schell out the extra $$ for apex parts.

My G17 trigger is sweet for a glock. My recently assigned G19 trigger feels different but far better than the MP trigger.

I hope to have a shield 9 soon and hope that trigger is much better.

I prefer a trigger with a positive reset.

Good luck with your decision.

I have the full size M&P 9, have a bit less than a thousand rounds out of it with zero issues and the dang thing is just plain accurate with factory American Eagle 124 FMJ and Speer Gold Dot 124+P's. I had a couple of Glocks "good guns" but they did not fit my hand well and I replaced them with the M&P 9 and M&P 45 because they fit my hand so much better.

Thanks for all of the replies,
I truly appreciate it. There's been some pretty good information shared so far.

I had an M&P 9 and it was great. Not one issue while I had it. To me it feels much nicer in the hand than the Glock. I did the Apex trigger and it came out Very nice!

I'd go with the Glock 19 over the M&P. On trigger and accuracy alone.

And I'd take a 3rd generation 9mm over both of your choices. Any 3rd gen 9mm. Good luck! Regards 18DAI

Which fits your hand better? For me, it's the M&P. I have small hands, and even the Gen4 Glocks don't feel as good as the M&Ps do to me.

The other thing is, right now you can read lots and lots of complaints about the late model Gen3 and Gen4 Glocks, and how Glock isn't dealing with it. I know you have to take what you read on the net with a grain of salt, but this is a repetitive theme on Glock Talk, not an isolated complaint. That is not to say that you won't have a problem with a M&P, but S&W is well known for customer service, and if you do have a problem, S&W will address it and fix it.

Whatever you get, it should be a pistol that fits you and works for you...that's the one and only criteria.

Thanks again everyone, it's appreciated, definitely some food for thought.

Definitely go rent both at a range and see which you like better. Advice is always good but your personal preference is what counts. You may have 99 people say they prefer M&P better and 1 Glock better. That doesn't mean M&P is better it just mean more people like the way it feels to them. You may be the one that prefers the other and your the one that has to shoot the gun you pick. That being said I like the M&P better. Happy Holiday's! Hohoho! Just ask Santa and maybe you won't have to buy it.
